We're starting to think about packing the hospital bag (I'm neurotic) and that got me thinking about what you get to take home. What kinds of goodies did you ladies get?
Also, is a carry on sized suitcase with wheels overkill for the bag?
Francesca Pearl is here! Josephine Hope is almost 3!
Are you asking what you would take from the hospital? Everything that is not nailed down, seriously.
The blue ball aspirators are great (get like 3 of those), because the hospital ones are the best out there, take whatever they leave you in the bathroom too.
As for bringing a suitcase w/wheels, do it. It's safe to have everything, like camera, laptop, baby book, DH clothes, your going home clothes, babies going home clothes, etc. Good luck!
If the wheeled suit case is small but i wouldn't be wheeling in a large one, LOL.
Like Jen said, take everything that isn't nailed down. What I should have done is put dipes in my bag so they'd replenish them for me to take home more Also, bathroom stuff is nice with the panties, icepacks, tucks pads, etc. You'll need it at home.
Since i didn't pack my bag, my H and neighbor put stuff together. I had a pair of clothes to go home in, my slippers and some hair stuff/makeup stuff. We were so close to home that IF I needed anything we could just go get it. I didn't need more stuff to lug home.
I took a carry-on bag & barely used anything out of it! I think I used: ~ 1 pair of socks (my feet got cold in the delivery room) ~ a towel from home (bigger & nicer than the ones in the bathroom there) ~ flip-flops for the shower (yes it's a hospital but I didn't feel comfortable not wearing shoes in the shower there) ~ baggy, comfy clothes to wear home ~ chap stick ~ baby outfit (we had 1 boy & 1 girl outfit since we were Team Green)
DH's bag got way more use! Of course, he had the camera, laptop & dvd's in his bag. But, he went home to get a shower & change clothes.
As to what we brought home: everything we could! First off, they give you a big bag (it'll be on the bathroom door) w/ a bunch of stuff for YOU in it: ~ 2 sizes of pads (1 that seems like a diaper, 1 a little onger than a regular large pad) ~ ice packs (helps w/ the swelling) ~ Tucks pads (helps w/ the swelling) ~ Dermoplast spray ~ Peri bottle (SO nice) ~ Mesh undies (totally not flattering but better than getting your own undies ruined)
In addition to that, I also got: ~ a sitz bath (never used it though) ~ Wintergreen Oil (the nurse used it to try & help me pee, weird but it worked! Apparently the smell helps your muscles to relax) ~ Pumping supplies (I didn't take them though since they were only good for the hospital pump & I wasn't renting one of them)
And for DS we were allowed to take pretty much anything in the crib: ~ Formula ~ Diapers ~ DH, don't ask me why I don't know, even took an extra umbilical cord clamp ~ the aspirator ~ His knit hat ~ 2 or 3 receiving blankets (Be sneaky, you're not suppose to take the linens!) ~ 2 or 3 burpies (again, be sneaky, not suppose to take the linens. BUT these have turned out to be my fav burpies because they're BIG. Our friend is a pediatric nurse & got some more for us from his office)

Welcome!
& One more thing I forgot (sorry, it's been 5months, lol!): pillow from home! They have pillows there but I really love MY pillow. DH brought his too. We brought colored pillowcases but never ended up using them. No one came in to try & take my pillowcase thinking it was the hospitals
Everytime them wheel in the baby bassinet take all the diapers out. Magically the next time it comes back it is full(:
As for you depending on your situation dermaplast is amazing. I had trouble finding it at the store. I told my nurse and she brought me an extra. If I remember correctly that stuff in pricey. I had a really bad tear so I went through several boxes of tucks!! Get what you can for the hospital. FYI storebrand Tucks are not near as good. I am not a brand name snob but this is one of those things that the name brand is much better.
Other then that everything else has been covered. Oh yeah you can order a TON of food enough for you and DH. Order your max and don't waste money on a guest tray. If your DH is there at meal time. I was there during the visitor ban last year so we were on our own.
Good luck. No complaints about GBMC. I assume you got the parking ticket booklet..........?
I think people have pretty much covered everything. But, the two things I will take to the hospital with me next time is a pair of slippers and maybe a nightgown. I got tired of wearing their weird slipper socks, but I did get blood on them a couple of times so it was nice I could just leave them there and ask for more. I did get tired of wearing the hospital gowns. I'm not a nightgown person, but they do need to check you A LOT and if you were wearing pants, it could be difficult. I might even take my make up next time. Yeah, I'm weird. But, sitting the hospital room feeling out of place for a few days, I found myself really wishing that I could feel a little bit more normal. But, honestly, I did fine with just a set of clothes to wear home, baby book, some activity books (things to do when it gets boring). When packing I tried to think of it like going to a hotel. Oh yeah, and your own soap and shampoo too.
I skipped the "take it home from the hospital" question here because I think everyone else covered it. Take everything you can. Oh, the chuck pads. Good for lying on in your bed when you first get home, if you need it, good for lying naked baby on so they don't pee on the carpet, good for next pregnancy when you're afraid your water is going to break in the middle of the night...
I appreciate all the answers! We haven't thought about getting a parking ticket booklet, what kind of discount is that?
UCGrad I appreciate your input. I am definitely packing slipper socks of my own and two crappy nightgowns that look decent from the neck up.
The parking ticket book rocks. For $20 you get the book of 10 passes that you can use for exit, no matter how long you have been there. It is awesome because you don't have to stop and take a ticket on the way in and because you don't have to find cash to exit. Also we gave the passes to our visiting guests,
If I remember correctly it was 10 tickets for 20$. My OB was on the GBMC campus so most appts were more then the 2 $ a ticket cost(: The gift shop or the guard shack.
If you are there for more then like an hour it is better to use the ticket. Funny thing was when we pulled out with our brand new DS all proud of our ticket (we were there for 2 days).........The gate was wide open we did not have to pay for parking anyway.
Not sure if you did your hospital tour yet but that is another time the ticket comes in handy. I hate paying for parking anywhere but a hospital???? When you are a patient that is lame. Glad I could pass a trick along to you. You are always so helpful (I think you are the 529 guru).

When we were there, the pass was just 1 ticket that you kept with you & showed at the gate. It had an expiration date written on it. We also let guests use it.
Also, when we left, we gave it to the gate attendent & asked him to give it to someone else to use for the mat ward so it wouldn't go to waste.
Don't know if GBMC does this but @ AAMC the humidifers are single patient use only and if you request one for your room you can take it home with you. I took one when DD was born more than 2 yrs ago and it's still chugging away.
Also no one mentioned to take the disposable pads that they put under you- they are called "chuks" I believe and similar to wee-wee pads people use for puppies. I found them to be helpful during the first few weeks when you need to change diapers constantly, I would just lay one down and do a change on the sofa, etc.
I agree with all the previous post. I absolutely loved GBMC and they let you go home with almost everything in the room and in the crib. I was in the hospital 4.5 days due to my C-section. I also had a carry on suitcase that fit most of my things. They leave a GBMC bag in your bathroom, so you can take the disposable pads, peri bottle, and I also got the little bin to give your baby a sponge bath. They gave me the Lasinoh cream for sore nipples and breast pads. I rented the pump, but they have the AMEDA's and they are huge.
For the baby, they let me take a whole pack of NB diapers that I loved, A&D ointment, receiving blankets, and wipes. I do recommend that you bring your LO some onesies. The little shirts they had were too small for my son, so I was glad I had packed the onesies because the nursery was cold.

GMBC is very stingy about them now. My tech said you could only have them the first night and after that it was a washable mattress pad. I did ask my nurse about them when I left and she got me a couple without the tech knowing. The tech it was due to budget cutbacks, which does not make sense since we are charged for them one way or another.

Don't be afriad to ask for more stuff, either.
