my doctor won't give a pertussis vaccine?

I just called my family doc to get an appt. for my dh and dd to get the flu and pertussis vaccine.  The nurse is telling me she will check, but he hasn't been giving the pertussis vaccine to people who have been calling in!  I explained that I am pregnant and think it really is needed (unless she can provide info to the contrary)  she is checking with him.  REALLY WTH!?  How hard is it to give the darn shot....it's not like my insurance won't cover it!  Is there somewhere else I can look into them getting one?

Re: my doctor won't give a pertussis vaccine?

  • It's my understanding that most hospitals are giving it before you leave.  There's evidence that getting it while pregnant could impact your LO's future immunity to pertussis when they get the vaccine (can't remember which month they get that one).  There's a good bit of info on the CDC website regarding this.

  • My doctor said I should get it, but that it isn't available to them yet.  Maybe they only have enough for certain things...I don't know.

I would definately fight for it.  My bosses whole family got the whooping cough last year very badly and her husband had an attack while driving and flipped the family vehicle.

I tell everyone to get it now!  Hope you can get some resolution.  You might try the health department in your city.

  • a lot of doctor offices don't carry it or recieve it.  i know mine doesn't.  try your local health department.  we plan to make an appointment there for hubby.  i'll get the pertussis vaccine in the hospital after delivery.

  • From CDC website

    Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap)
    • Pregnancy is not a contraindication for use of Tdap. Data on safety, immunogenicity and the outcomes of pregnancy are not available for pregnant women who receive Tdap. When Tdap is administered during pregnancy, transplacental maternal antibodies might protect the infant against pertussis in early life. They also could interfere with the infant's immune response to infant doses of DTaP, and leave the infant less well protected against pertussis.
    • ACIP recommends Td when tetanus and diphtheria protection is required during pregnancy. In some situations*, healthcare providers can choose to administer Tdap instead of Td to add protection against pertussis. When Td or Tdap is administered during pregnancy, the second or third trimester is preferred.
    • Providers who choose to administer Tdap to pregnant women should discuss the lack of data with the pregnant women and are encouraged to report Tdap administrations regardless of the trimester, to the appropriate manufacturer's pregnancy registry: for Boostrix? to GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals at 1-888-825-5249, or for Adacel?, to sanofi pasteur at 800-822-2463.

      * Situations with increased risk for pertussis: Healthcare providers can choose to administer Tdap instead of Td to protect against pertussis in pregnant adolescents for routine or "catch-up" vaccination because the incidence of pertussis is high among adolescents, in pregnant healthcare personnel and child care providers to prevent transmission to infants younger than 12 months of age and to other vulnerable persons, and in pregnant women employed in an institution or living in a community with increased pertussis activity.

I will be getting one before being dc'd from the hospital.  Even though the CDC says it is ok in 2nd or 3rd tri, by doc does not want to give it to pregnant women unless they are in an outbreak area (ie. California).  DH and my mom got theirs last week.

  • You aren't really supposed to get the Pertussis vaccination while you're pregnant. Most hospitals are giving it PP before you leave the hospital. The flu shot you can get now.

Thanks, I was too lazy to look it up!

"They also could interfere with the infant's immune response to infant doses of DTaP, and leave the infant less well protected against pertussis."  <----This is why I didn't push my OB to get the shot now.  However, I also do not live in an outbreak area and DH and my parents are already vaccinated.

  • You cannot get it pregnant, so don't worry about it yet for yourself.

It is available here.  I don't think this is a seasonal vax (I could be wrong) so I don't know why they wouldn't have it.  If the docs office won't do it, maybe Walgreen's Take Care Clinic?

Target will do them.  They were listed on the form I had to fill out when I got my flu shot there.

They wont do it on  you pregnant.  Any research you do regarding the shot states that  Dtap will be given after birth.

  • My DH got his at our local health department for $10. His doctor doesn't give it.
  • I got whooping cough when I was an infant. So I should be immune right?  ( this is a question I will ask my dr., but it just came to me cause I hadn't really thought of it)

I'll probably request it for DH though.

  • My Ob is not giving them if you are pregnant.. I am getting a booster before I leave the hospital.. I got one of the first tetnus/pertusus combo shots back in 2005 so she wants me to have a booster shot.

We are haivng major issues with getting one for my dad( staying w us for 3 weeks after baby is born) He lives overseas in england and they dont do a tetnus/pertusus combo so he is going to have to get the one that little kids get with the polio in it.. very strange.. also tetnus is not given ever 10 yrs like it is here. :( I was a little stressed about this a few weeks ago cause there is almost an outbreak here in CA.

  • I, too, am getting mine before I leave the hospital and my DH, parents and ILs got theirs already.

My biggest concern is my friends and coworkers, many of whom are teachers. I want them to come meet my baby but I'm stressing about their exposure. I had a student last year who got it and she HAD been vaccinated, which was a little disturbing. If there are any cases at all in my school, I will ask my friend to wait a while before holding baby girl.

Tdap is not a seasonal vaccine. And as pp said, pregnancy is not a contraindication. Try your local health department. They should have an immunization clinic or see if your hospital offers it pp.

  • My OB won't give it during pregnancy, but I'll get one after delivery at the hospital.  DH got it this morning, but in our area, they ONLY offer it to adults in the tetnus/pertussis combo...
  • The OP is talking about getting the vaccine for her DH and DD, not herself.

We have also had trouble getting the vaccine for DH. His doctor won't give it to him, so he's going to call the county health department.

I don't think it's like chicken pox, with lifetime immunity. Definitely ask your doctor.

Does anyone know if you can get a pertussis vaccine without the tetanus component?   I got the tdap booster shortly before getting pregnant, but my DH cut himself and needed stitches a few months ago and they gave him a regular tetanus booster in the ER (not version with pertussis).   Is there a way he can get the pertussis protection without getting another tetanus shot? I don't think it's recommended to get two doses of the tetanus shot a few months apart since it's a 10 year vaccine?

and to the OP: I would guess that doctors can special-order it or something, not sure if insurance would cover it. Though it does depend on if companies actually make the single vaccine...
