Re: drop-side crib vs. fixed side???

  • We're going with a fixed side crib. This is the one we picked:

    https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Shelby-Classic-Convertible-Cappuccino/dp/B001W2CCY2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1286228009&sr=8-1

It's supposed to be great for short moms (I'm just over five feet tall), and it seems like so many of the drop side cribs have been recalled lately that we didn't want to bother. Just a personal preference I guess.

  • I got fixed sides.  Most issues with injuries from cribs comes from incorrectly installed hardware or just worn out hardware on drop sides and the sides drop spontaneously and injure the baby.  I would only consider a drop side if I was considerably shorter than average (less than 5'0").
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

"It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?" - A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
  • I'm going w/fixed - I've heard about injuries w/drop side.
  • I would go with a fixed side crib.  I had a drop side with ds, and while it was nice to have as far as lowering the baby into the crib goes..it was so noisy as it came up, it would wake him up.  I am pretty sure starting in 2010 they are going to stop making drop side cribs completely due to safety hazards..Google drop side cribs to get more information..
    Good luck!

  • Do they even sell drop side cribs anymore? We bought a fixed side crib for this LO. Ds's crib is a drop side and we never use the drop side on it, they really aren't necessary and the drop side on ours was a PITA to use anyways.
  • We have a wonderful drop side crib and if you have any back issues or you are short you should consider it.  I am 5'5 and to reach clear down in a fixed side crib is a HUGE PIA and I threw my back out doing it!  Also toddlers are able to climb out of fixed sided cribs much earlier than fixed sided cribs.  Yes there are a bunch that have been in the news these days but if you assemble them correctly and buy a good one they are wonderful.  I highly doubt they will quit making them since they have been making them for the past 70-80+ years??

  • We went with fixed.  I've heard drop-side is very dangerous.

They also made cars without seatbelts until we realized how unsafe it was.

The CPSC announced in August that they are proposing new crib safety standards that would ban drop-side cribs.  That's expected to be finalized in December

    https://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2010-05-23-babycribs-banned_N.htm?csp=obnetwork

The CPSC has said that "While CPSC staff cannot say that every drop-side crib is hazardous, based on investigations of incidents we have received, the agency believes that overall most drop-side cribs are more prone to mechanical failure than similar designed fixed-side cribs."

This makes it a no-brainer for me.

  • I agree with most of the PPs....drop-side cribs are on their way out for safety reasons. There are a number of cribs that are built shorter for shorter folks to be able to reach in with ease if that's an issue for you. Good luck!
  • I understand why drop-side cribs aren't as safe as fixed side cribs. However I am 4'11'' and feel that it is really unsafe that after a point I can no longer reach in and put/take my child out of the crib.

I think that if they are going to due away with drop-side cribs then they need to come up with more options for shorter parents. I the only brand that I know that makes a crib for shorter parents is Baby Dreams and the low end for one of there cribs is $450.

Oh before I forget yes Ikea does make cribs and yes at the lowest setting I can reach in, however with how many time I have had to fix things that I have gotten from Ikead I would not put my child in a crib from them.

  • I bought a drop side last time. It got recalled when my ds was 7 mths and he had to sleep in his play pen for a month. I would not get one ever again it isn't worth the risk. I heard they are trying to pass a law that will do away with them. After a mass recall a few months back I see why.
  • I thought most stores have stopped selling drop side cribs for safety issues.  I am short, but we will figure out a way for me to get my child out of a safer fixed side crib.
  • I read somewhere that in June 2011 drop-side cribs would no longer be available.  And that consignment stores, etc... no longer take drop-side cribs.

  • We had a drop side with DD1 and got rid of it. We never used it and I am 5'2" It was a  PITA to try and get it down and noisey.  We got fixed side for this time around and I will continue to use the step stool to reach down and get the baby.

We got this same crib... I'm 5'1".  We don't have the mattress yet, but I definitely think this will be easy enough to reach into for me.  I decided on this one based on reviews of short people - we do have options!  Drop side never crossed my mind once I found this one.

Exactly! I feel like yelling "Hey! Short people! Buy this crib!" The reviews are all of women around our height who love this crib. We definitely have options that don't involve drop side cribs!

  • We wanted the Ikea Gulliver (fixed) and great for me (I'm 5'3") and something in our budget. :)

  • We bought our Munire crib in 2008 for DD (will use same crib for baby DS).  I didn't even consider a drop down as the concept seems inherently dangerous to me.

Of course most of the recalls are dummy errors from people who don't put them together correctly or people who buy cheapo ones with all kinds of plastic parts.  If you buy a nice quality one they are wonderful.  I love mine!  I also felt it was much safer because ds couldn't climb out of it (and he is a climber) and end up on his head, which seems much more dangerous to me!

  • We went with fixed. My H and I are both tall (6'2" and 5'7"), plus with all of the recalls and impending ban, it just seemed like asking for trouble to get a drop-side.
