Recommend your convertible car seats...

I'm starting to think about our next purchase needed and I think a new car seat will be it so I am thinking a convertible one will be the smartest purchase so we won't need to buy a booster seat down the road;

Please give any recommendations, comments, advice about yours - thanks...

Re: Recommend your convertible car seats...

  • A convertible seat does not mean that you won't have to buy a booster late on. Especially because car seats have expiration dates, so your seat may expire while your child still needs to be in a booster.

    Also, the recommendation is to keep your LO rear-facing until the age of 2, so if you plan on following this recommendation, then you will need a seat that rear faces and well as forward faces for later.

    You are probably think of the combination seats (aka 3-N-1) and honestly none of them are recommended. The only combo seat that I would ever purchase would be a Graco Nautilus, and it does not rear-face.

    The Eddie Bauer and Alpha Omega seats are crappy and get very poor ratings as far as ease of use, etc. They are also poor booster seats.

    Anyway, here is a website to check out:

    As far as convertible seats go, I have 2 Britax Marathons and 1 Britax Roundabout 50. I love them.

  • We have two Britax Boulevards for our cars and a Cosco Scenera for the grandparents car/travel. I love our Boulevards, they are easy to install, easy to adjust and DS seems super comfy. All three of our seats are RF until 35 pounds but Britax just came out with the new generation of carseats that are RF to 40lbs.

    I do agree with pp you will almost definitely need a booster still, depending on where you live the law can be up to 9 years old that they have to be in a booster seat. But if you get a convertible with a high shell then they will be able to comfortably fit in it until they are ready for a booster. From what I've seen the boosters are not nearly as expensive as the convertibles so I wouldn't worry about needing one of those in 4 or 5 years.

  • I LOVE our Britax.

    We have a Britax Boulevard (for the car where my daughter rides in the outbound seat), a Britax Decathlon (discontinued), and Two Britax Marathons.

    Love them all! So easy to install and my dd fits in them with room to grow. She is in the 94th percentile and still has lots of room.

  • This is an excellent time to buy. Sale on Britax at albeebaby.com. Got a Roundabout55 for $150, free shipping. Normally $200.

  • We have the sunshine kids radian as our main seat (up to 80 lbs) and a cosco scenera for DH's car.

  •
    The Britax Advocate is the only carseat on the market with both side impact head restraints and extra side impact cushions - which reduce crash impact by 50%.  With so many big SUV's on the road, the more protection, the better.

    Even if you don't choose this seat, be sure to get one with at least the added head restraints.  The new Marathons, Boulevards, Advocates, and all the new Recaros have this feature.  The Britax Roundabout does not - so stay away from that seat.
