3rd Trimester

Prepping for baby / diapers

I thought I read somewhere it's not a good idea to stockpile diapers before LO comes in case you don't like a particular brand or if baby has sensitive skin.

So what is everyone doing, just buying whatever in newborn size and going from there?  Are the brands really that different from one another?

I'd love to be able to buy a ton from BJ's (wholesale club) but I don't want there to be an issue and to be stuck with all these extra diapers...

Re: Prepping for baby / diapers

  • I have heard the same thing.  I'm not going to stock up too much.  We got one package from my shower.  We also had someone make us a diaper cake using diapers from my SIL (so I know they are ones that are liked).  I figure we'll see how many we have after my next shower and go from there.

  • I bought a few packs/boxes of newborn and size 1 diapers (6 in total). If I end up not liking a certain kind I will return the unused packs and try something else. Simple as that.
  • I have had several friends tell me they felt strongly about buying a good brand in newborn. So I bought two boxes of the Huggies Natural (they are so soft!!) in newborn. Hopefully they fit him.

The rest of the diapers I have were gifts so they are in different sizes and are different brands. I'm going to try them all and see what works best before buying any more.

  • We've gone against that advice and have a shi*load(literally) of diapers, from NB to size 3.  My mom took it upon herself to personally stock us up and we weren't going to turn them down.  If LO has a reaction or we don't like them we will be returning them and trying a different brand.

  • I bought three packs of diapers in newborn sizes. I have Huggies, Pampers, and Target Brand. I intend on trying them out, seeing if she prefers any of those, which ones work the best, etc. And then, we will buy which ever brand works best for her.
  • We have plenty of newborn and size 1 (and a couple other sizes) diapers from various brands, but not a crazy amount. All were gifts from family and friends; I personally have not purchased a single diaper yet. We're not planning to buy any more or stockpile any, because as previous posters mentioned, it's hard to know how many you'll need and  what size/brand will work best for the baby. So, we'll try the ones we were given and then figure out what we need from there.

  • We went against this advice as well and went ahead and stockpiled.  We have several packages of NB, several cases of size 1 and some packages of size 2.  The wal-mart near us will exchange them as long as they are unopened so we saw no reason not to.
  • We have a total of 80 diapers in newborn size -- half Pampers and half Huggies Naturals.  I know that it isn't all that many, but DH will be heading to the store in the first week to pick up more in whatever size/brand we like.

  • We have at least 3-6 cases of every size diaper from NB to size 4, almost entirely in Huggies.  I work for the company and they have a product sale every year where the diapers are pennies compared to what you pay in stores.  If I need to I can exchange at my local walmart and have the storage space so I saw no reason not to take advantage.
  • DD is over 6 weeks old and I still havn't bought diapers on my own because people gave us so many. All diapers are NOT created equal, but we have been fine with using the kinds that were given to us.

If you need to get some yourself, I'd advise getting one small pack of a couple kinds. I go through 8 or so diapers a day, so make sure you buy enough at least to get you through the first week.

  • The brand totally matters.  Different ones work best for different kids.  IRL among my friends, Pampers for boys and Huggies for girls has always been true, though I know that's not the case across the board or on The Bump.  I am a 2nd time Mom here with ZERO nb dipes yet.  But I keep meaning to pick up some Pampers Swaddlers.  The hospital also uses them so I will just clear out the stash they give me.  After the meconium goes away, I am switching to cloth this time anyway.

  • With DD, the generic diapers and even LUVS made her break out and have awful diaper rash as a new born... after about 4-6 months she was fine with them, but I still preferred Pampers. Also, I had opened a whole sleeve of newborn diapers, and she never fit in them... luckily I was able to donate them to a shelter for women and babies.

This time, I'm planning on sticking with Pampers, stocking up on them with my fingers crossed... worse case they are from my registry on BRU and I can exchange them later on. The key to stocking up, is saving receipts and not opening anything.  My biggest problem with the BJ's diapers is you have to buy 100+ just to see if they work... GL!

  • I bought a package of preemie (O was 6lb and in preemie for a couple of wks) and a package of newborn.  I will leave the hospital with a ton that they give.  I see no reason to stock-up, as I won't be stranded in my home...
  • The first time around, I didn't buy diapers for two months - people gave us so many! This time around, I'm buying in bulk based on my favorites that worked for DD. Yes, I know all babies are different, but I'm not that worried about it. If Pampers Swaddlers don't work for #2, DH will have to run out and get something else.

FWIW, I prefer Swaddlers to the BJ's generic NB diapers, but once L outgrew Swaddlers, I liked the BJ's brand as much as Pampers Baby Dry, so I typically buy BJ's brand now.

  • Since we found out I was pregnant, we've been putting $10/week on a Target gift card. We did this when pregnant with DD and it was super helpful after she was born! Then we had all that money on the gift card to use for diapers or random things we had forgotten to buy.

  • we had a diaper party thrown for us.. so we received over 3,000 diapers! yes, im bragging..

you can return them anywhere that carries them and exchange them for a different size.. my boys are 3 1/2 weeks old and i think we have gone through about 450 diapers already.. i think you'll want to stock up somewhat, trips to the store just for diapers seems like it would be annoying

  • I did get some disposables but I'm concentrating on gathering my cloth diaper stash together. As weird as it sounds, I'm enjoying the research and am looking forward to seeing how it works out when LO arrives.

  • Besides not knowing how fast baby will grow out of newborn and whether or not there will be skin irritation, I've been told by my cousin and sister (both who work in infant rooms at the daycare) that if you have a little boy, some of the "knock-off" brands don't work very well.. There are a lot of leaks until baby gets older and his penis starts pointing down a little more, rather than up.

I haven't ever experienced it myself as this is our first little one, but it seems to be a reliable source...
