I thought I read somewhere it's not a good idea to stockpile diapers before LO comes in case you don't like a particular brand or if baby has sensitive skin.
So what is everyone doing, just buying whatever in newborn size and going from there? Are the brands really that different from one another?
I'd love to be able to buy a ton from BJ's (wholesale club) but I don't want there to be an issue and to be stuck with all these extra diapers...
Re: Prepping for baby / diapers
I have heard the same thing. I'm not going to stock up too much. We got one package from my shower. We also had someone make us a diaper cake using diapers from my SIL (so I know they are ones that are liked). I figure we'll see how many we have after my next shower and go from there.
I have had several friends tell me they felt strongly about buying a good brand in newborn. So I bought two boxes of the Huggies Natural (they are so soft!!) in newborn. Hopefully they fit him.
The rest of the diapers I have were gifts so they are in different sizes and are different brands. I'm going to try them all and see what works best before buying any more.
HTH!!
The two men in my life. Oh, and I have a husband too...
DD is over 6 weeks old and I still havn't bought diapers on my own because people gave us so many. All diapers are NOT created equal, but we have been fine with using the kinds that were given to us.
If you need to get some yourself, I'd advise getting one small pack of a couple kinds. I go through 8 or so diapers a day, so make sure you buy enough at least to get you through the first week.
With DD, the generic diapers and even LUVS made her break out and have awful diaper rash as a new born... after about 4-6 months she was fine with them, but I still preferred Pampers. Also, I had opened a whole sleeve of newborn diapers, and she never fit in them... luckily I was able to donate them to a shelter for women and babies.
This time, I'm planning on sticking with Pampers, stocking up on them with my fingers crossed... worse case they are from my registry on BRU and I can exchange them later on. The key to stocking up, is saving receipts and not opening anything. My biggest problem with the BJ's diapers is you have to buy 100+ just to see if they work... GL!
The first time around, I didn't buy diapers for two months - people gave us so many! This time around, I'm buying in bulk based on my favorites that worked for DD. Yes, I know all babies are different, but I'm not that worried about it. If Pampers Swaddlers don't work for #2, DH will have to run out and get something else.
FWIW, I prefer Swaddlers to the BJ's generic NB diapers, but once L outgrew Swaddlers, I liked the BJ's brand as much as Pampers Baby Dry, so I typically buy BJ's brand now.
we had a diaper party thrown for us.. so we received over 3,000 diapers! yes, im bragging..
you can return them anywhere that carries them and exchange them for a different size.. my boys are 3 1/2 weeks old and i think we have gone through about 450 diapers already.. i think you'll want to stock up somewhat, trips to the store just for diapers seems like it would be annoying
Besides not knowing how fast baby will grow out of newborn and whether or not there will be skin irritation, I've been told by my cousin and sister (both who work in infant rooms at the daycare) that if you have a little boy, some of the "knock-off" brands don't work very well.. There are a lot of leaks until baby gets older and his penis starts pointing down a little more, rather than up.
I haven't ever experienced it myself as this is our first little one, but it seems to be a reliable source...
