Baby is arching back and grunting while feeding

Most feedings my son seems to do well, but about once a day he has a feeding where he will start to eat fine and then start grunting and arching his back.  He gets really disturbed, but as soon as you take the bottle away he is crying for it back.  He only stops crying when I give it back, but then he grunts and arches his back away again afetr a few minutes.  Any ideas what this is?  He was on similac and now on enfamil.  It is horrible to watch.  I feel like I am hurting him.

  • My daughter used to do this. I racked my brain trying to figure it out too. We switched bottles, switched formula, and gave her gas drops. I don't think I ever figured it out but she did stop doing it. Maybe its just a baby thing.

  • Try burping and then giving the bottle back?  Mine does something similar and it's usually gas.
  • my son did this & it was acid reflux..once on meds. never done it since.. it could just be gas!
  • Thanks everyone!

  • Our pedi. diagnosed him with acid reflux.  His wasn't bad enough to require meds., but you should talk with the pedi.  GL!

  • Definitely ask your pedi about this!  Babies arching their backs is one of the big signs of acid reflux.  It doesn't mean it definitely is, but if so, it is easily treated and medication or a few little tricks would make him feel lots better.
