If you don't have cable...

We don't have cable either and there's one thing I'm wondering about.  People are so hooked on tv - do people think your kids are weird because they're not obsessed with cable shows?  My SIL once told me their doctor was so impressed that their LO knew all the words to Hannah Montanna songs.  I thought to myself that if that's going to be a gauge of intelligence we're going to be in trouble.lol.

  • I'm sure my friends think we're weird, but they don't tell me about it.

I also don't let my kids watch TV until they're 2. That's another issue! LOL!

My kids DO watch TV. We have a DVD player hooked up to a small TV in the playroom. The girls get to watch 1 hour when L naps (he doesn't watch TV). There are many days when they don't watch any TV. We have a lot of DVDs.......

I don't take issue with people that want to let their kids watch TV. I just don't like it when I'm judged for not letting them watch it or really limiting it.

  • I would love to follow that but I don't think I'll have the strength.  I also know that there is NO way my DH isn't going to watch tv with him and I want to avoid fighting about it.  If he becomes a zombie I'm pulling the plug though.  I have several nieces and nephews and their reactions to tv is mixed.  Some were completely in a trance while it was on, some not.  I wouldn't judge you for sure - I would admire you!  Oh, wait that should be I DO admire you!

ETA - the tv issue is weird with some people.  I notice if I say I don't have cable, some people take that to mean that I'm smug or think I'm somehow better than them.  So now I say I don't have HBO or whatever channel the program is on.

  • We did not have TV growing up.  We had one, but it was only on for the Nightly Business News and the occasional football game.  People do think it is weird, and they don't want to come to your house to play.  I am more balanced with my kids.  I let them watch some TV, usually 3 shows a day, for about a total of 1 hour.  DS watches less, since DD normally watches TV when he is napping or still in his room in the morning.

My kids are not obsessed, but they like the shows and some are a spring board for other activities they do.  DD wants to make a map of the world this afternoon because of some show she watched with DH this morning.

  • I'm not sure but DS and DD#2 mostly watch dvds.  They love musical ones so they learn songs from there and DS is also a huge fan of construction stuff so he loves Bob the Builder.

However, DS knows the words to a lot of DD#1's songs on her Ipod.  She'll play it for the kids to dance to and they are like sponges.  They memorize words like crazy!

  • Eh, I don't really care what people think. I'm sure as my son gets older there will other kids who think it's weird that we don't have a tv. If they can't bond about something other than tv shows, it's probably not going to be a lasting friendship anyway.

  • People usually think we must be really poor because we don't have cable. We also don't have a lot of material stuff, so people just assume we must be poor.  Then they are surprised by how much we do with our kids.  We choose to spend money on experiences over stuff.
