So we're going to start the transition to the big kids bed soon for DD (25 months old). It seems like what we have to do since we are on our way to being potty trained and I can't imagine that DD should have to call to us to get us up if she has to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. That being said, she isn't good at getting on the big potty herself yet, so she might need to call us anyway. What did others do? Anyone have a potty trained LO still in a crib? She has been fighting bedtime like no other, so I don't imagine the transition will go well. I can see her running out of her room as soon as we put her to bed, and then going to wake up her sister. Any tips on getting her to want to stay in bed? Is it as easy as just telling her not to get out of bed unless she is sick, there is a fire or she needs to use the potty?
Re: Transition to big kids bed - a must if potty trained?
Hmmm... I wonder if you want to tackle both at the same time? The transition to the big bed and potty tranining? Or have you already started the potty training? If she's already fighting bedtime, maybe now is not the time to do both at the same time?
Although kids are pretty resilient so two big milestones at the same time isn't the end of the world.
We had DD #1 (and will have #2) in a big girl bed several months before we started potty training, but I imagine that if she was still in a crib when we potty trained her it wouldn't have mattered much because she STTN and doesn't get out of bed in the middle of the night to go potty.
Does your daughter STTN or get up in the middle of the night?
That's tough. Like artslover, my DD was in her bad before being fully PTed. Even after she was PTed during teh day, she still wore pull-ups to bed for a little while. Even now, she's been in underwear around the clock for a looong time (over a yr) but when she needs to pee at night she still comes to get me to help her.
fwiw, I thought DD would be a terror once she went in her big girl bed, but the novelty was so good for her that she stayed in bed really well. In fact, for the first 6-7 months that she was in the bed it was almost like she didn't realize that she could get out. She'd still call to us in the morning to come and get her, just like she did in her crib! I didn't give her any of the reasons you gave to not get out of bed. I just told her to stay in bed til morning (again, she wasn't PTed at the time).
