how much more do thighs/butt grow?

I can't button most of my work pants anymore and I bought some maternity pants this weekend but then DH questioned the sizing.  I bought stuff that fits perfectly now (but if I gain too much weight in the thighs, it will definitely be too tight).  My old pants all fit fine except in the waist area but it's not the most comfortable with the belly band.  DH thinks I should wait and just wear a belly band with my old pants until I really need maternity pants to get a better idea of size but a lot of other ladies on this board seem to be wearing them.  I hated how the next size up looked, just hanging off of me.  How much more do the thighs/butt grow during pregnancy after the 1st tri?  He thinks I should be able to use whatever maternity pants I buy during my entire pregnancy...

  • I don't know the answer to this but the lady in the maternity store last week told me to buy the size I normally wear and that the pants will grow with me.  That was probably a crock of sh!t though.  I have the bella band and I am not comfortable wearing that without buttoning my pants, I have a fear of them falling down while I am teaching my 6th graders!

  • It just depends on the person.  I actually lost fat during my pregnancy (I had gestational diabetes, on a strict diet) But I don't generally gain weight in my butt/thighs, I gain in my stomach, so I didn't put on a whole lot in that area.  So depends on where you normally gain weight.  But your hips will widen and stay that way.  So even if you lose all your pregnancy weight after you give birth, you may still wear a different size afterwards.

  • My last pregnancy I wore the same maternity pants from my 1st trimester all the way through the day I delivered.  In general, the buy whatever size you wore PP should work just fine. ;)  QUALITY maternity clothes do make a difference.  It's worth it to spend the money on a few good pairs of pants for sure!  I highly reccomend pants from Motherhood Maternity!  I only gained 33 pounds with my last pregnancy and the pants all grew with me just fine ;)

  • I've been worried about this same thing.  I bought pants that fit now and I'm a little worried, too.  But... I figured that even if I grow a lot in the last few months, I can still wear these pants for a few months now and post-birth, too.  I got a pair of very form-fitting jeans, but my husband said they look better than my normal jeans and I felt really good in them, so whatever!  :)

  • I have really narrow hips... but with my first they spread so much I couldn't fit into any of my jeans.. not just because of the waist, i couldn't even get them past my thighs!!   I waited to buy my first pair until 5 months with my first.. I wouldn't go crazy buying stuff now because you wont be able to wear it for very long.... It gets expensive quick...
  • There's really no way to tell how you are going to carry your weight. Your hips will spread and that will change the way your clothes sit permanently. I carried all of DD's weight (and it was A LOT of weight) in the belly- straight out. Nothing else gained! But my GF carried everything in her top half (face, arms, boobs) and it got progressively worse as the pregnancy progressed.

I would make it a point to invest in a few pieces now and then judge in a few more weeks.

  • I think it depends on the person. I was in maternity pants at around 6 weeks because I am carrying my baby in my butt and thighs..I have gained 6 lbs and it is all in my backside. I never had a butt before baby and now this baby got back :) My sister was the same way. Ask the women in your family where they gained weight and you will have a better idea of how much your butt and thighs will grow.

  • With my first baby (DD), I started with a size small maternity pant and ended up with a medium by the end when my hips had started to spread a bit. I didn't increase in leg size or butt size... but my hips were so much wider that I had a tough time feeling comfortable in the pants when seated :(

I don't suspect that will happen again this time as I'm pretty much already jacked up but we'll see.
