So I'm thinking of making the switch to cloth diapers. How'd it going? I've not ventured to the CD board because it's SOOoo overwhelming, but I'm collecting my research right now. I think if day care is willing to take it on we're on board. Any suggestions for a mid-baby switch? What are you using?
Re: **yankeebaby** and others who cloth diaper
It's going great!
There's an FAQ at the top of the CDing board now; that will likely help.
You can use one-size diapers, there are a lot of good brands. I have a mix.
It does seem slightly overwhelming at first, but once you know what kind you want, it's fairly straightforward.
We use BumGenius OneSize 4.0, and I love them. We opted for the hook and loop instead of snaps, but that's just preference.
I love them, they're so easy to use, I haven't had any smelling issues yet, and they come clean in the wash.
I say give it a trail before you go CD crazy. I started with 3 smartipants diapers one weekend. We put them on Z, washed them and re-used them. It was our way of seeing if we could handle it and to make sure Z didn't react to them.
Then we started to build our stash. We only have smartipants, BG's and fuzzibunz all of which are pockets. We like all 3 and have not had a problem with them. We use the Green generation (I think that's the name) detergent. We do a cold prewash and then a hot wash. We hang the diapers and throw the inserts into the dryer.
ETA: we started cloth diapering later in the game. I think Z was about 3 or so months. It was an easy transition and now everytime I pass diapers in the store I think to myself " thank god I don't have to spend money on those".
We switched at 3 months. We did it because LO was breaking out with every disposable we put him. Once we started CDs though all the rashes went away. I actually starting researching CDs when he was 2 months old, it took me a month though to figure out what I wanted to do. Ultimately I chose bumGenius O/S. It was the ease of use and the fact they would grow with my baby that got me to buy them. I absolutely love them. I have both 3.0s and 4.0s. I have tried prefolds, contours and AIOs too, but I just don't care for them all that much. Once I got our wash routine down it's been a breeze. It took a little bit to figure out the right detergent and stuff. (We use RnG HardRock, we have insanely hard water here.)
I think if you're wanting to use CD at daycare, you need to go with bumGenius with the velcro. They are the most like disposable diapers and the easiest to use. Take them in with you when you go to discuss CDing. Take your travel wet bag and show them exactly how it works. Stuff the diapers before you put them in the diaper bag so that your DC provider won't have to do it. Show how to put the diaper on and how easy it is and then show them how they just put the diaper in the provided wet bag. I know that more and more daycares are being more open to the idea of CDs, especially if they are the new modern, easy to use dipes. It you're wanting to do prefolds or fitteds, do those at home.
It seemed overwhelming at first but then it was pretty easy to figure out once I knew what I wanted. Here is what works for me.
I use the bumgenius all in one one size for the days he goes to MIL> She is slowly getting the hang of it although last week I had to fish two diapers out of the dumpster.
My H at first like the all in ones the best but now prefers the fitted. The fitteds are great. It's a just a fitted diaper and then you can cover it with what you want. I use wool soakers to cover the fitteds.
I am hooked right now on pocket diapers.
I wash diapers about every 3 days and it's so easy even DH can do it.
There are some great ladies on the CD boards that answer all questions. Dr Lorreta is one and so is UTKD and pixiestix is very knowledgable too. Nobody there flames the newbs so feel free to post on the CD board.
oh and to hijack your post so I can b!tch about my MIL, last week she threw away two diapers and when I say throw away I mean down the trash chute and in the dumpster for the whole building. DH was like, C'mon I'll pay for the two diapers but don't go in there! I did anyway. And then made him buy two more diapers anyway because his mom is crazy.
She refuses to use the wetbag because sh says it is too pretty. She keeps wrapping each soiled diaper in individual plastic bags.
But all in all, I feel guilty venting about her because I actually love her very much. She watches my kid twice a week and he adores her and there is nothing she would not do for him.
I'm actually embarrassed by how excited I am when waiting for cloth diapers in the mail!
I'm currently waiting on some monkey snuggles and I'm gonnapeeinmypantsI'msoexcited!
I have mostly one size pocket diapers. I prefer the velcro personally. I have a mixture because I buy what's on sale. I have some BGs, Happy Heinies, and some Ebay brands. The ones I bought from Ebay are some of my favorite. They were usurper cheap with free shipping.
I also have some Grobaby that DH likes because he doesn't have to stuff them. they just snap right in.
Sadly our DC won't CD, so we use Huggies Natural for DC.
I SAH, so we use fitteds/covers
Likely daycare will want an AIO (all in one) or a Pocket pre stuffed and ready to go.
If you are planning on having more kids I would do sized diapers (XS,S,M,L) because then there is less wear and tear. If you are just thinking of just DS then I'd go with a OS diaper.
Also, snaps will last longer than velcro, but some say you can get better fit with velcro (I do just fine with my snaps)
