Marijuana

Are any of you marijuana smokers? If so, will you continue to smoke while pregnant?

  • Sad attempt at drama for a boring Monday?

  • No and no, but my mom in her hippy days smoked all throughout her pregnancy with me. I had always wondered why she didn't have morning sickness:).

  • Some people do to get over morning sickness. If it is that bad and a choice between that and prescriptions with who knows what side effects, I can't really blame them. I read a post once about a few people using it to relax during labor as well. Certainly not for everyone, but it was interesting.

So smoking weed while pregnant has no side effects on your baby?

  • So on your profile youve already had 1 miscarriage but you want to take the chance of smoking weed and having another one? Dear god I cant believe who is reproducing now adays. There should seriously be some sort of paperwork and background checks for idiots.

This.  I'm pretty sure the health effects on tons of hippies smoking and a bunch of college aged kids who hang out at burrito places late at night does not = clinical trials of marijuana smoking on a fetus.   I'd much rather the prescription, TYVM.

  • Some of these answers are just sad. Some people are so ignorant about marijuana. I seriously recommend watching the documentary "The Union", it will change the way you think about marijauna for sure.

And to the poster that said "you already had a miscarriage and now you want to smoke..." get your facts straight! There is NO proof showing any harm to the fetus by smoking marijuana. The US is way behind on research but if you expand your research to other countries you will find that there are no known effects on the baby. How could you say something so mean with no facts to back it up? Spew your misinformed hatred somewhere else!BTW-she only asked the question and did not say she smokes, don't be so quick to attack!

Millions of women smoke pot while pregnant to help with nausea, millions smoke it to help with other medical problems as well. Marijuana is not the horrible drug your government makes it out to be.

I am not advocating smoking pot all day every day (especially not to pregnant women) but to attack someone for making a personal decision that does not cause harm to their child is ignorant.

  • Whatever. I have smoked marijuana before, and knowing how it made me feel I will pass on smoking something that likely passes through to the baby. I could care less is you sit around taking hits and drinking bong water all day long but I draw the line at smoking an illegal drug while pregnant. Sorry.

Smoking anything deprives the baby of oxygen. That alone should be enough reason not to.

    https://www.pregnancy-info.net/marijuana_and_pregnancy.html

Q: If a woman is pregnant and smokes marijuana, will it hurt the baby?

A: Doctors advise pregnant women not to use any drugs because they could harm the growing fetus. Although one animal study has linked marijuana use to loss of the fetus very early in pregnancy, two studies in humans found no association between marijuana use and early pregnancy loss. More research is necessary to fully understand the effects of marijuana use on pregnancy outcome.

Studies in children born to mothers who used marijuana have shown increased behavioral problems during infancy and preschool years. In school, these children are more likely to have problems with decisionmaking, memory, and the ability to remain attentive(2).

Researchers are not certain whether health problems that may be caused by early exposure to marijuana will remain as the child grows into adulthood. However, since some parts of the brain continue to develop throughout adolescence, it is also possible that certain kinds of problems may appear as the child matures.

  • My mother smoked weed while pregnant, I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that I have extreme asthma and was in the nicu for 4 weeks because I came out blue/purple with no cord wrapped around my neck (btw i was full term)? It has everything to do with it. So yeah oxygen deprivation is a very real possibility.

You're ignorant and selfish if you cant give up something for your child's health and safety. Do you want YOUR kid smoking pot? didn't think so...

And please, give me statistics on this. Not just your word. Because I am highly, highly skeptical that MILLIONS of women smoke pot while pregnant to help with nausea.

  • I have a colleague, whose daughter is now 5 weeks old. She smoked 7-10x a day throughout pregnancy and smokes now, with the baby in the room or while she is holding her. She has told me this herself and doesn't really see an issue with it. She also smoked about a pack to a pack and a half of cigarettes a day. The little girl was 2 weeks late, being born. She weighed 10 pounds. I noticed something very odd about her though. She never, ever cries. And other people who know her have said the same thing. The baby just doesn't cry. I think that's an issue. I mean, babies cry when they need care and attention, and she never does. I feel so bad for that little girl. A few of our friends have reported this to CPS. I don't know where that's going, but I hope they get that baby support and help ASAP.

Unless you know the grower or grow it yourself you never know what is in what you're smoking, what kind of pesticides they use on it, or if it's laced with anything else. And I agree with the oxygen deprivation argument, unless you are using a vaporizer you're breathing in smoke which can't be good for your baby. Until they legalize marijuana (which I'm all for) and can start doing test on how it effects babies, real tests that I can look at and see the results myself and not just rely on what someone else says, I will still think it's not okay.

    wow, just wow

you do realize a documentary in no way has to be based on fact and most documentaries are incredibly biased in one way or another, they really mean nothing except that the director has an opinion and tells a good story.

There are studies that show marijuana has long term effects on children under the age of 13, and sounds like there are also some found by pp that shows some known effects on the fetus.  Studies or not, clearly it is a drug none the less!!

I think the PP was saying you have already had a miscarriage and with your second chance this is really a chance you are willing to take??  ( otherwise why are you asking)

I am not anti- marijuana by any means, but I am anti- stupid risks when a childs life may suffer for it.

  • Shouldn't people be able to ask questions without being criticized?

Nowhere do I see the OP come out and say "I smoke marijuana".

Several of you are assuming that she does.

You know what they say about people who assume =D

TOTALLY this! Just sounds like she was asking the question looking for information.. So, at this point some of you are attacking someone that is just looking out for the best interest of her child and gathering information for herself. Which isn't that the WHOLE point of this board.. Especially the Natural Board? We are all doing our own research to figure out if what our doctors are telling us in this country is really what we should be following for our own life choices.. So, I find it interesting that we all talk about the side effects of pain medication being so harmful, yet if you looked for articles about it being "safe" I'm sure you could find them. Then when someone asks about marijuana being unsafe, we pull these articles against it and tote them as fact. It is something that is not legal or controlled in our country, so of course they are going to advice against it. I agree with some of the PP on the fact that unless you know your grower, you have no guarantee what they could be using with the plants.. also smoking anything can reduce oxygen flow to you and the baby. So, personally I wouldn't suggest it or very limited if at all. At the same time, I have a good friend that in a L&D nurse and smoked with all three of her kids, now grown and all perfectly healthy. Another thing that makes me laugh, is the fact that Ing May's group at The Farm were probably all smokers considering the timeframe.. Not that by any means should demean the valuable information she has been able to pass on to so many of us. We all need to be asking these questions and searching out the information for ourselves.. and really not be judging people for doing just that..

  • This made me laugh because I thought this was a joke but if not I have no words.

Hmm. Illegal drug use while pregnant? Yep, sorry, I am going to judge. I don't care what board this is on.

And spare us the 'I know someone who smoked every day and her kids are just fine'. My 10 year old twin cousins were put up for adoption the day they were born because their birth mother smoked weed. They have breathing issues and other issues. So there you go, my story negates yours. One good for one bad.

  • I do know that midwives sometimes will recommend marijuana for morning sickness if the risk of weight loss is greater than the use of marijuana. Hyperemesis Gravidarum can be very serious and modern medicine can't always solve it.

I wasn't trying to say that made it okay, I'm sorry if you took it that way. She was also doing this during the 70's, so the whole timeframe was different and the drug was not as chemically altered as it is today. By no means was this meant to say go ahead and do illegal drugs with total disreguard for your baby. All I was getting at was that we shouldn't be judging her for asking the question. At least she was asking..

  • I appreciate all the feedback. I have posted a longer reply in the 1st trimester board if you're interested in knowing more about why I asked.

Be well ladies...see you online soon.

Some people would be more comfortable with those than the effects of prescription meds. Sure, you don't know what pesticides may have been used, but you don't know about them in our food supply either. I'm just saying that sure, there are women who continue to do drugs of all kinds during pregnancy, due to addiction or really not caring. But there are also people who seriously evaluate the risks and benefits of marijuana for MS. And they don't have to smoke it, so oxygen depravation doesn't have to be an issue.

  • Here's my thoughts with all of it (cigarettes, marijuana, caffiene, alcohol, OTC and prescription drugs, etc...)... If you aren't willing to put it in your newborn's bottle, don't use it during pregnancy. So... would you put it in your baby's bottle? If not, then don't use it! Also, in my opinion, if you can't give up something for 9 short months of your life, that's an issue.
  • I believe in the book "What to Expect when you are Expecting" there is a chart of all the different effects of different substances on your unborn child.  We  were shocked that caffeine  has worse effects then marijuana. I chose not to expose my boys to either or many other things like parabens and BPA, but still, caffeine is worse than marijuana! And pregnant women get told all the time they can have their morning coffee still. We live in a strange world.

  • OP - I dont know your reasons for asking and I wont make any assumptions but I will answer you from what I saw growing up in Jamaica where it is also illegal, which is supposedly the weed capital besides Belgium.

I have seen too many babies affected by it to say it's not worth the risks. Most of the females in my family are/were nurses and they will tell you stories to no end as to why not to do it so hopefully that helps you somewhat and GL.

Personally and a lot of my family, friends and people in Jamaica in general will tell you that this is *thinking how to put it nicely* -  BS. I grew up in Jamaica most of my life and it is blatantly obvious the effects on the people who use it and on the babies/children who are around it. I even saw what it was doing to my own son because his moron of a sperm donor used it around him whenever he had him and needless to say he hasn't seen him in over a year (and no this is not the only reason why he doesn't see him).
