Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Hm. Need some opinions.

Trying to condense this story a bit, since it has a lot of history if any of you remember my past posts.

I was pretty much told I have two pay periods (30 days) worth of work as of today.  HR is trying to find me another position, but the only thing open would work for me logistically (work at home option, not sure on hours, pretty big pay cut), but professionally - it isn't an engineering position.  I don't think it would benefit my resume at all - it's a program admin type position.

If I don't follow through with this, I'd probably just be laid off at the end of the month, where I could collect unemployment for a while, and try to think about if I really want to stay home, or look elsewhere, etc.  I've never been on unemployment in my life.

Honestly, what would you do?  Engineering positions are few and far between right now.  Being laid off, and accepting a program admin job would both hurt my resume, though some might say that the admin job would be worse, believe it or not.

  • I would absolutely take the lay off/unemployment option.

In this economy, I don't think it would hurt your resume as much as you are thinking.

  • Another thing to think about--

DH is currently looking for a job b/c he was laid off 4 mo ago. He is a mechanical engineer, and has applied everywhere for the industry he's worked in. He has come across job openings that say not to apply if you are currently unemployed. We've come to the conclusion that these companies want people that have been actively using their skills. I think this has been mentioned on GMA also.

I would be focused more on whether I want to be a SAHM or a working mom, and if we could afford it. I don't think having an admin job on your resume will hurt you. There are ways to spin this positively on resumes and interviews. If you decide that you would like to continue working, take the admin position, and look for a new job.

  • A HUGE consideration should be made to the following:

If they are going to offer you an alternative position regardless of the pay decrease, it could make you ineligible for unemployment.  Same thing just happened to my neighbor's husband.

I would absolutely take the lower-paying position until you can find a new engineering job in your field.

  • I thought your plan was to be a SAHM by december? Or did that change?
  • It's easier to get a job when you have a job- so if you're going to be job hunting, take the new position and start looking for a new job.

Collecting unemployment while NOT actively looking for work is fraud. Don't take the layoff if you're not planning on looking for a job.

I really don't think it will hurt your resume as much as a layoff. You can simply explain in an interview that your position was eliminated and this is what they offered you instead.

Wow, that's pretty sh!tty!  I'm not even close to an engineer, so I take back my advice.  :P

I would be afraid of this as well. I know, being an engineer as well, going in to interviews, they always ask you what you did at your previous position that would be relevant to what you are applying for. Most engineering positions have skillsets far from other positions like admin. You could always explain why you weren't in an engineering position prior, I am sure they would understand given the economy right now.

  • go for the layoff/unemployment, if it comes to that. You will have a few months to think about what you want to do/shop around. You will likely be bored and frustrated in the admin role.

  • I would take the other, lower paying position. You can take some time while you are working from home in that position to decide if you want to SAHM or find a different engineering position.

That was the plan.  However, a new contract at my company was looking to hire part time engineers/tech writers.  I actually enjoy tech writing, so I was hoping to hold off for that, since it would be work at home, AND part time.
