Baby Names

Is Owen becoming too popular?

So the hubs and I are really liking the name Owen. But I feel like ever since we said that, I hear it all over the place. We like good solid old fashioned names. We dislike trendy, goofy spellings and anything too popular. My husband is a Matthew (goes by Matt). Growing up he always had 3 other Matts in his class and hated that. It's a good solid name but we want our kid to have something more unique (BUT NOT WEIRD!).

So tell me, have you heard this name coming back? Do you know a lot of new Owens?

  • I feel like you're the 5th person to ask that in the last month.  So I'd say yes.  It's a great name though!

  • Yes, becoming too popular.  Try something simliar but much more unique like Oren/Orrin - LOVE it!
  • This was our hesitation with the name and I'm glad we didn't end up using it.  I went to a children's museum a few months before DS #2 was born and I heard at least 5 mothers calling out "Owen".  DS #1 goes to a Mom's Day out program and there are 3 Owen's on the class roster.  It's a really nice name, but it might be our generation's Matthew.
  • I only know one Owen, he is about 6. His mother's maiden name was Owens.

I think its a great name, and I don't think it is too popular. At least, not in my personal experience.

  • Yes. And its stinks because it's my favorite boy name as it is my maternal grandmothers maiden name and we havent used anything from their side yet with my two DD's.

  • It's 51 on the SSA list (I only know because it's on our list) but I only know 1 Owen IRL, and he was my 10th grade history teacher.  I do see the name on this board a lot, but I personally like to judge popularity by how many people I know (or someone I know knows) with the name, because I think it really depends on your area.

  • Without looking too far, I know 7 Owens under the age of 4. It's getting very trendy.
  • Yes, a great name, but I know quite a few under the age of 5.
  • I feel like there is one almost everywhere we go these days and DS is almost 2.  A couple recent newborns on FB too.
