What do you follow? Dr.'s schedule, your own, something you found?
Are there any you are choosing to opt out of?
Finally what about the flu shot this year? I am nervous b/c it is not just the flu shot. It contains 3 other vaccinations including H1N1 and a lot of children had adverse reactions to that last year.
No flames please, I've been doing a lot of research lately and although DD has had all of her vaccinations up to this point I think that by age six having had 81 vaccinations sounds like a lot to me. It's an overkill on our immune systems. TIA
Re: Vaccinations and Flu shot
We follow our pediatrician's vaccination schedule.
DS will be getting his flu shot next Monday. In our opinion, there's more risk with him not getting it than getting it.
We are pro-vaxing but do a slightly delayed schedule. I went in with the Dr. Sears schedule but our pedi suggested an alternate that wouldn't involve any shot-only visits, and we agreed to that. At their 18m they got 3 shots but otherwise they get no more than 2 injections per visit. It just made more sense to us to spread them out a little more so they're not getting as much to deal with at once, but they are fully vaccinated.
We are doing the flu shot this year. DH worked in the pharm. industry for 12 years, much of that time working specifically on the flu vaccine, and with his level of knowledge of the flu shot we are both very comfortable getting it for ourselves and our LOs.
we pretty much follow the doctors schedule, except we had the girls just get the MMR at their 15 month appt. (only b/c of the risk of localized reaction & b/c the girls did get fevers and a few bumps from the varicella vaccine) and went back for the other boosters and their flu shot this past week....with them in daycare and me working in a healthcare setting, I think the benefits of the shot far outweigh any risks...GL with your decision!
ps. the flu shot contains different strains of the flu (not different vaccinations) including h1n1...
Flu shot only contains different strains of flu, not other vaccinations. Its not a big deal.
We are following the recommended schedule, he is in daycare and I want him to be protected. Besides, its what my pedi does for her own kids.
Just be wary of where you are doing your research-there is a lot of non-scientific garbage on the internet.
DD #1 passed away in January 2011 at 14 days old due to congenital heart disease
DD#2 lost in January 2012 at 23 weeks due to anhydramnios caused by a placental abruption
We have mostly followed the standard schedule, but spread out so she doesn't get more than 2 at a time b/c otherwise she is super cranky and uncomfortable the next day.
As for the flu shot, all of them have 3 strains in them, two type A viruses, and 1 type B typically. They choose the 3 strains they think will be most prevalent during the upcoming flu season.
We follow the standard schedule, got DD the seasonal flu and H1N1 last year and will do the seasonal flu for her this year.

We're doing all vaccinations, but on a slightly different schedule. We started out on the normal schedule, but DS breaks out in really bad hives if he gets more than one shot at a time. He's not allergic, but according to his allergist, it just kind of overwhelms his immune system. It's not harmful to him, but it does make him really uncomfortable.
The only shot I've refused so far is MMR because I was reading that Merck is going to be bringing back the vaccines as separate shots in 2011 and I think that will work out much better for DS. Our pedi is ok with putting that off a year.
If by the end of next year there isn't an update on MMR being broken into 3 separate shots we'll probably just give him the combo shot and deal with the hives or hope that his reaction won't be too bad. I just hate seeing him so miserable.
We started out delaying, then after we moved to Canada we spread them out so he only received two at a time. He was caught up at 12m.
We are delaying the MMR until he is two and are choosing to decline the Chicken Pox vax. He will get it once he's of school age if he hasn't got the Chicken Pox naturally.
He will not be getting the flu shot because no one in our household does.
