A friend of mine was saying that it's common that when you name your baby "so and so the 3rd", as in the same name as his father and grandfather, that the parents often nickname him Tripp. Has anyone ever heard of this? Then she was saying how she noticed that some people use Trey instead of Tripp as a nickname for a boy who's the 3rd. I have never heard of this, but it explains why my 1/2 brother and his girlfriend who just have a baby, call him Trey, when his full name is exactly the same as his dad and grandfather. I always thought it was weird that they call him Trey when his first name is really Raymond (which sounds nothing like Trey). Maybe it's a southern thing?

Yes, I know both Treys and Tripps who are the 3rd in the family.
Isn't Will Smith's oldest son Trey a 3rd? I might be making that up.
This. Tripp does make sense now that I hear it, I'd just never heard it before.
And I've never heard the Chip thing. Learn something new every day.

I've never heard of either, but I've only known one Third and he and his father are both Joe's. His son is Joseph the fourth and when he was little they called him Peanut, but now he's another Joe.
While it very well may be a southern thing, I think it's a neat idea if you are adamant on using the same name.
