2nd Trimester

Naming your baby the 3rd- have you ever heard of this trend?

A friend of mine was saying that it's common that when you name your baby "so and so the 3rd", as in the same name as his father and grandfather, that the parents often nickname him Tripp.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  Then she was saying how she noticed that some people use Trey instead of Tripp as a nickname for a boy who's the 3rd.  I have never heard of this, but it explains why my 1/2 brother and his girlfriend who just have a baby, call him Trey, when his full name is exactly the same as his dad and grandfather.  I always thought it was weird that they call him Trey when his first name is really Raymond (which sounds nothing like Trey). Maybe it's a southern thing?

  • i was just about to say how standard it was around here...when i noticed you are in my neck of the woods, exactly!  yep, i know several treys and tripps...none of whom have that name legally.  apparently "chip" is the norm for the 4th generation kids.  that i didn't know until just recently.

  • I dated a guy who was a third and went to church with another one. Yes, they did call him Tripp. It's not completely unheard of though I did think it was something that generally was a part of the south.

  • Yeah, if the father and grandfather have the exact same first mid and last name he would be a 3rd.. My stepbrother is a third, and that is what we all call him Third.  Kinda weird, but normal
  • I've heard of the Trey thing but not Tripp.

  • I'm from Minnesota and have only heard of one person who was called Trey. He went to high school with me and was also the third and moved to Minnesota from somewhere down South.

  • Yes, I know both Treys and Tripps who are the 3rd in the family.

Isn't Will Smith's oldest son Trey a 3rd? I might be making that up.

This.  Tripp does make sense now that I hear it, I'd just never heard it before.

And I've never heard the Chip thing.  Learn something new every day.

  • I have known both Treys and Tripps and they were the 3rds also.  DH is a 3rd but he does not go by either and LO will be a 4th so I can't think of any good nicknames I like to call him by.  I knew a guy in high school who was a Jr. and instead they called him Duece!  haha  I do think it is a southern thing though.
  • I've never heard of either, but I've only known one Third and he and his father are both Joe's. His son is Joseph the fourth and when he was little they called him Peanut, but now he's another Joe.

While it very well may be a southern thing, I think it's a neat idea if you are adamant on using the same name.

  • It's fairly common...all over the country.  I know several Tripps and Treys from the Hamptons area and in the North East.  You don't see it quite as much since many couples are looking for youneek names for their kids.  They maybe only use the first or a middle name...not both.

  • I know treys tripps and Chips.... all in in the context you are speaking of. I'm from Tennessee though so it may be a southern thing. It's just normal to us though
  • We have Trey's and Tripp's in NM and West Texas too!  I'm also heard of shortening the name.  For instance, the grandfather's name was James, his son would be Jim, and then the grandson would be Jimmy.  Legally they're all James, but the nickname is shortened.

  • I know a Trey, and it makes sense to me since it means 'three'. I haven't met a Tripp before though-but now that I know this, it may explain why someone I know said she is naming her baby boy Tripp. I didn't know it was used the same way as Trey.
