Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Day Care-WWYD?

DD has been in the same daycare since she was 8 weeks old.  She is  now almost 10 months.  Lately, they have added two new teeny tiny babies (6 weeks each) to her room bringing the total to 2 infants and 4 older babies.  On Friday her afternoon teacher was out and through the chaos of the teachers filling in, they forgot to give her a bottle until 2pm. Meaning she ate at 6:30 with me and was fed breakfast and lunch (though the note home said she didn't each much lunch) and then a bottle at 2.  I picked her up at 5:30 and she hadn't eaten since 2.  The owner kept making excuses, blaming it on the fact that my DD took a later nap and ate lunch instead of a bottle and that things just got all mixed up it was just a overlook.  I was so angry.  I still am...I feel  like her 1 teacher (there is only 1 in there at a time) is overwhelmed.  Her morning teacher called me this morning and apologized and took the blame...this is the same lady that gaver her pizza the day before for lunch even though I have said not to feed her any school lunch other then fruit and veggies (we're trying to keep her on the healthy track)

I am really upset.  I am looking for a new daycare...WWYD?

  • I would continue to look for a new daycare. Do you know what the ratios are in your state? In FL, it is 1:4. I can't believe that it would be 1:6 in an infant room, but I may be wrong.

  • What are the laws in your state as far as teacher/child ratios?  Usually it's 4 kids per teacher in an infant classroom.  If there are six kids in the class, they need another teacher.  Even if they are spread out (some kids come in later, some kids leave earlier), they are probably over the four-child limit at any given point in the day.

Bottom line, if you aren't comfortable where you leave your child, it's time to find another alternative.

  • GA's state ratio is high in the infant room...1:6
  • It's so hard, but if you're upset over it and want to find a new DC, you should go with your gut.

I experienced something similar.  My son's daycare got two 8 week olds an done 8 month old in one week.  There was a bit of craziness going on for a few days and while they were trying to get resettled, we had a day where my LO ate his lunch, had a bottle at 1:30 and didn't have AnYTHING else until my H picked him up at 4 and he had his dinner when he got home at 4:30.  I was very upset thinking the poor kid was starving when he got home.

You should look at pro's and cons of staying vs. leaving.  I, like you, was very upset and really thought long and hard but at the end of the day, I know that his teachers love him, he is happy when I drop him off, whenver we go to pick him up in the afternoon he is always playing with a friend or a teacher and he's thriving.  We've had 3-4 very small hiccups including the bottle incident, so in the end, we kept him there, but you need to do what is right for you and yoru family.

  • If the infant ratio is 1:6 where you live, I'd be concerned that any DCP you go to you'll find an overwhelmed teacher. Aside from this incident (and the pizza thing) are you overall happy with your DCP?

And they mix older babies with infants?

I'd probably shop around.  Although we did deal with chaos at our daycare when a teacher went on maternity leave.  Once the sub got into the groove though, it was back to normal.

The ratio is 1:6 where I live. Our daycare usually is at 1:5 (below state regulations), but will occasionally  be at 1:6 if someone is off sick.

The no bottle situation would really piss me off. My daughter usually has 3 bottles between the time I drop her off and 2:00. She would be a mess if they "forgot." I think I would also be looking for a new daycare.
