NBR: camera recs

My SIL's mom dropped my camera and it broke.  I'm sure it's fixable, but I'm using this as an oppurtunity to get a good camera.  What should I get?  I want something decent that is more than a point and shoot but east to use and takes nice pics.  I'm trying to justify the cost by telling DH if I get a good camera, I won't need pro pics.

  • I love my Canon Rebel.  I have the T1i, but you could probably get away with a lesser model.  I only went up to that one because it offered the 3200 iso, and a few more megapixels.

Whatever you do I would buy it from a local ma & pa photography store if possible.  My uncle owns one & says that people come to him all the time who buy their stuff at Best Buy because the workers there don't really know how to teach people to use the equipment properly.  That way, if you have issues in the future, you will always have a knowledgable person to go to =)

  • The Rebel line is great.  I'd sell you my XTi if I ever get it back but you probably want a new camera sooner than that.  If you are on a budget and don't care for a video feature than the Rebel XTi or XSi would be good for you.  A nice used one can be found on Craigslist for $350-400.

If you want a video feature look into the T1i.  The T2i is out now so you can find T1i's used and refurbished pretty cheaply ($600 or so).

If those two are still over your price range I've heard great things about the Powershots!  Never had one myself, though.

  • We have had our Rebel xTi for 4 years now with no complaints :) Although I have to admit neither one of us has taken the time to take more then a handful of pictures on any setting other then auto, so if you don't have the time to learn I would probably get a point and shoot.

  • I have the Canon Rebel XSi.  Love it!
  • I got the Nikon D5000.  I picked that one because it can also take video.  I'm still trying to figure out all the technical stuff with it, so I'm mostly using it in auto mode still.  It's been a slow process with me.
  • I'm a nikon girl all the way. A D3000 or D3100 would probably be best for what you are looking for.

  • I agree with PP-Canon Rebel Xt1 or whatever the newest model that is out now.

I have an older version-the Xsi- & still use it as a backup camera. It's a great camera & definitely good for what you would want to use it for!
