Quick question about diarreah and school

My DS threw up once on Thursday and once at 2am on Friday morning.  I kept him home Friday and since then he has been fine except for diarreah.  It's fairly watery and he did have a mild case of diaper rash.  Other than the diarreah and a very mild loss of appetite (he will eat just not as much as normal) the kid is fine.  Never had a fever or upset tummy since.

So my question is this....if he's still having diarreah, would you send him to daycare?  My doctor says that it may take a week for his stools to go back to normal but I don't know what to do about daycare.  Ideas?

Re: Quick question about diarreah and school

  • What is their policy? They are going to know if he has diarrhea there, so if their policy is that kids can not be there with diarrhea, don't send him. Stuff him full of cheese, bananas, and rice to help things firm up.

  • I would definitely check their policy. Our son's DCP requires 24 hours of no barf/diarrhea/fever. If he has 3 diarrhea diapers (and didn't go there with D), he gets sent home. Did your pedi think he was still contagious? I agree with the cheese, rice, etc but would like to add holding him off milk for a bit. That usually helps.

I agree, our DC will send him home if he has loose stools.

  • DD had diarrhea a few weeks ago but had no other symptoms....no fever, no loss of appetite, just a loosey goosey.  No amount of feeding her certain foods would firm things up.  It took about a week to get better.

That being said, out daycare's policy is more than 3 times in a day.  We just barely made it that week.

  • our daycare's policy is if they have 2 runny stools in one day they can send the child home... sometimes with the babies they don't if the baby is acting normal and has eaten new foods - they understand that can cause runny stool.... but 3 they will go home for sure.
