What do preemies & Csec Mamas need?

SIL is having a Csection for pre-e. I'm headed to BRU to get some preemie outfits to wash & bring to her. She's 32 weeks so he'll be in the NICU for a while. Should I buy preemie dipes? What else could they need? Mama AND Little Max. TIA

  • Preemie clothes. The hospital will have diapers for him.

She really just needs you to be there for her. Love, support, and a shoulder.

With any luck, he won't be in the NICU all that long! Go on the preemie board and post. They're AMAZING over there.

  • I agree with lots of love and support. But if you want to get her some gifts, maybe a good book. Gift cards for food that way she can grab something quick since she isn't going to want to be away from the NICU for to long.

  • Yup, the hospital will have diapers, but preemie clothes are always helpful.  GC to restaurants with take-out or meals they can heat up/take with them to the hospital help.  Offers to run errands - grocery shopping, laundry, dry cleaning, whatever - always helps.  And lots of love and support.
  • Silver lining... skilled RNs to care for her baby so that she can heal like a CHAMP!!  Absolutely offer to do stuff around the house.  Looking back that was THE BEST thing that people did for us.  My family came through with flying colors coming out to be near us and stay by our sides until DS was out of the water, but my NEIGHBORS were so freakin' awesome taking care of our house/yardwork and animals for 3 weeks.

    I couldn't thank them enough!!

Gift cards were great!  When they get an indication of a discharge date, coordinating a celebratory dinner with family would be awesome too.  That was my most memorable part of being in the NICU.  Going out to a nearby restaurant to celebrate - and, TOTALLY not caring that I looked like hell, I mean, my kid was coming HOME!!

  • My best friend had a c-section at 32 weeks due to pre-e also.  She was an hour away from any family, so while I was waiting at the hospital DH (then BF) and a few others stayed back at the house and cleaned like mad.  Even though baby didn't come home, Mom and Dad came home to a clean house.  Preemie clothes are good.  Is the nursery finished?  Maybe check the registry for any important items that are still unpurchased?

I agree with the PP, lots of love and support.

  • One thing that I have not seen suggested is a journal.  Get her a pretty notebook that she can use to track weight, doctor comments, etc.  The doctors will meet with her every day, and will give her a report of how the baby is doing, any concerns, last weight, height, etc.  I really wish I had documented more of that when my son was in the NICU.

Other ideas: something to document the handprint / footprint size now, newborn size clothes (the day my son was able to wear Newborn size clothes was a very big deal to me), a digital picture frame that she can keep at her house to have pictures of her baby at night. (may be a nice group gift)

    This exactly.......from a preemie mom :)

DS was born at 33 weeks due to pre-e.  He was in NICU for 3 1/2 weeks, which was long for us, but not too long in the grand scheme of things.  We needed preemie clothes - we found that the button up sleep and play type pjs with hats worked best because you could unbutton some buttons for the monitor leads and the hats were needed for "touch" time when DS was out of the isolet.  The hospital provided preemie diapers and by the time we left the hospital he was almost in NB diapers so we didn't really need a ton of those.  I think what I needed most was meals so that I could grab something to eat in between NICU visits and if you could (and she would be ok with it), maybe help her keep up the house or do laundry for them or something.  Those were the things I was really glad that I didn't have to worry about.  Also, lots of people will have questions about how the baby is doing (and endless questions like how much does LO weigh now, when will LO go home, etc.).  The questions were endless really and they made me want to throat punch even my most loved friends and relatives.  So, if they are comfortable with it, you might offer to field some of those calls to keep them from having to be on the phone constantly answering the same questions OVER and OVER and OVER again.

Then, when their LO comes home you might see if there is anything else they might need.  T&P to the new family :)
