Is Reglan still OK to use to increase milk supply??

My OB prescribed Reglan when I told her I wasn't producing as much as I had hoped, despite all my best efforts (I have consistently had supply problems for all my babies). Last baby my OB had also prescribed Reglan. I don't remember how helpful it was.... but that was 3 years ago. I haven't seen any "reglan" posts here, mostly just fenugreek? So I'm wondering, is Reglan still typically used? "In Style" for lack of a better phrase?? lol

  • most woman dont use it because of the side effects of the medication  they lean towards Domperidone (which you cant get in the states unless its from a compound pharmacy.) but you can buy it online.

Reglan has often been used in the U.S.. One major side-effect of Reglan is severe depression; it is contraindicated in moms with a history of depression, and all moms who take this should keep an eye out for signs of depression. One of my sources advises all adoptive mothers to stay away from Reglan, since it has caused serious depression/anxiety in moms regardless of previous history. This depression side effect usually develops over 3-4 weeks, and goes away if mom discontinues the Reglan. Other side effects include diarrhea, sedation, gastric upset, nausea, seizures and extrapyramidal effects (twitching, etc.)

? Per the AAP, classified as "Drug whose effect on nursing infants is unknown but may be of concern." AAP notes on this drug: "reported or possible effect: none described; dopaminergic blocking agent"; "Drug is concentrated in human milk relative to simultaneous maternal plasma concentrations." Hale reports results of a number of studies and indicates that domperidone is preferred but not available in the US. He notes that no pediatric concerns have been reported via milk, and that this drug is commonly used in pediatrics.

  • I took Reglan recently and saw no major side effects.  The other side effect that my OB mentioned was possible was fatigue.  Not sure if I experienced that or not... I'm pretty much always at a medium level of fatigue these days!  It did help increase my supply.  I was pumping 11-13oz per day before Reglan and after 4 days I was pumping 18 oz.  My OB only gave me two 10-day prescriptions and I'm assuming it's because of the side effects (plus the insert that comes with the medicine says that prolonged use of it can cause incurable tardive dyskinesia!)  After finishing the Reglan, my supply almost immediately dropped to about 15oz per day.  I ordered domperidone from In House Pharmacy as well.  It's only been a couple of days and no major increases yet, but I'm hoping to have some of the same amazing results as other women on here!
