High-Risk Pregnancy

Broken Heart :-(

I found out last week that DD possible has a heart defect where her heart may only have 2 chambers instead of 4.  I am going to a specialist tomorrow to do a full fetal echocardiogram and hoping to get some questions answered there.  I was just curious if anyone has dealt with this kind of news and wouldnt mind sharing the process.  I found out very late into my pregnancy, so everyone is rushing to figure things out.  I'm curious if I will have to have a c-section, can I breast feed, how quickly will there be a surgery or is it up to how well the baby does after birth, ect.

Any input would be very helpful!

  • I don't have a lot of experience with this particular issue, but I'm almost positive you're going to have a c/s so that things can be planned out and controlled.  They are probably going to want the pediatric doctors and the NICU standing by.  I also can't imagine them wanted to put your baby through the potential stress of a vaginal delivery.

I hope everything works out for you and your LO.  I would recommend you take your questions to the doctor who will be overseeing your baby's care after delivery.

  • So sorry about your news.  Is it hypoplastic left heart syndrome by chance?  I've known people who have delivered vaginal while others have a c-section.  Guess it really depends on your doctor.  Probably won't be able to breastfeed initially, but you can pump.  Sounds like your baby's heart problems is complicated.  Once she's born they'll prob take her NICU, do another echo, and stabilize her.  HLHS babies usually have their first surgery within 3-5d.  The second surgery btw 6-9mo and then the last around 2 years.  This is just from personal experience with our child.  Every child's situation is unique, and no one knows exactly what's going on until she's born.  Good luck.
