After so many (annoying) people told me I looked "too small" for 36 weeks - and for the record, I've gained 30 lbs so I disagree - I asked my OB if she had any sense of the baby's size at my 36 week appointment. She didn't give specifics, just said the baby was measuring a bit on the small side but that she would likely get bigger in the coming weeks.
Why can't I stop worrying about this? I know if there was really an issue, she would have said more. I also know the mother's size usually has nothing to do with the baby's size...blah. Just needed to vent I guess.
Re: Can't help worrying my baby is too small
Don't stress... I got those same comments from people with my first pregnancy and it's been no different with this one. DD# was 6lbs 7oz and I only gained 19 pounds. This one I have gained 17lbs, and have been measuring 2 weeks behind the entire time, and my doctor isn't worried at all because the baby is healthy. They would tell you if they were worried. Hang in there, I know how stressful the comments get.
I had a growth ultrasound when I was measuring small with DS (using the measuring tape, I was measuring 3cm behind and they like you to be within 2cm of your gestational age.... so, 30 weeks would be between 28 and 32 cm). He was perfectly on target and measured exactly to his gestational age, he was just sitting back pretty far. If your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't be worried either.
On the flip side, my aunt just had an emergency c-section last night 6 weeks early because her baby hadn't grown in 4 weeks in the womb and he and she had been measuring small the entire time - if they think there is any inkling to worry, they will check things out and act accordingly. (The baby is doing really well by the way - probably will be released from NICU in less than a week.)
Like others have said, if there was any reason to be concerned your doctor would have told you and done more ultrasounds and tests to find out more.
I do totally understand though, it's my first time too. If it continues to bother you, I would just ask at your next appointment if there's any way you can get an ultrasound that will give you a more accurate measurement. I'm sure your doc won't mind and fretting over it isn't really good for you or the baby. I've found that when in doubt, just ask. They are usually pretty accomodating. After all, it is your baby.
This.
Everyone tells me how small I look, but I never pay attention to what they say because they arent Drs.
