I want to start a few traditions w/ DD.  Tell me some of your favorite family traditions.

Re: Family Traditions

  • One of my favorites is Xmas Eve you get a present to open and it is always Christmas jammies so you look cute opening your presents.Smile

My parents always did this with us kids, and we've continued the tradition with DD (and DH & me)! I always loved getting into my brand new Christmas jammies on Christmas Eve. :)

We do this in my family too. But, as my sister and I have gotten older and moved out (we're usually with my parents on Christmas Eve because of family get-togethers), my dad usually picks one of the bigger presents he's bought us and we open those instead of pajamas.

Some other traditions we have are Family Game Nights (this is with all my cousins plus more extended family) every 3 or 4 months. I plan on doing a smaller, more regular version with our own kids when they're old enough to play games with us. Also, movie nights on the living room floor. DH and I do this every once in awhile. We blow up an air mattress, order take out, and watch a movie in the living room, usually falling asleep there after the movie. I can't wait to do this with our kids!

My mother does this for us every year. I don't even want to take this from her this year and have debated doing something different the night before. I just haven't put my finger on what I want.

Our family is very close and we still get together on christmas eve and take a jamma picture.

Someone help me think of something else besides Pj's that we can take to bed?

  • Advent calender with small presents and treats each day.

I do this with DS1 (and, of course, will with DS2 and future child).

We are starting this with our LO too!

  • We'll be giving our kids a group gift on Christmas Eve. DH has to work holidays and  our kids won't be able to open any gifts until he gets home from work. This way we figured that they'll have a new toy to keep them occupied while we wait for him.  I'm also planning on decorating gingerbread houses Christmas day while he's at work to keep them busy.

We plan on doing this too. We always read the Night Before Christmas every year. We always had the chocolate Advent Calenders.

Its Saint Nick's day. He leaves a gift in your shoe.

But now that I google it, apparently its actually December 6th. Apparently we always did it wrong :D

  • My Aunt had bought a Christmas/holiday book for her DD every year. She dated all of them.  I plan to do this as well.

For what it's worth many Greek Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 6th so at least someone is celebrating something on that day.

  • As I was growing up, my family didn't have much money. When we went to the gas station (to fill up gas or what not) we got like a dime or quater to buy a piece of candy..not much. But on our birthdays my dad would take us to this one station by our house..there we could choose whatever our little hearts desired with 5 dollars. Its not alot..but we still do it to this day and i'm 23.
