Toddlers: 24 Months+

When did your child switch from board books to paperback/hardcover books?

I'm looking to get more books for my daughter's birthday and Christmas and I was just wondering at what point they're ok with books that aren't board book. I want to buy more books but I dislike that the books are pretty much twice as expensive in board book version.  Do I need to just suck it up and buy all board books at this point if I don't want them destroyed until my daughter is like 4? Are books even safe then? lol.  I'm basically wondering when they aren't as rough on the books.  Any insight would be great!

  • is your DD under 2?  I would suggest getting board books...because they are more durable....but you can look at thrift shops or yard sales...I even found alot of good books a TJ Max and Marshalls...and it all depends on the kid...my DS was exposed to books at a really young age so he hasn't ripped any book and he has both board and real page books..Every child is different...some rip the books and some don't..GL  :)

My DD is 2 years and 3 months old.  I haven't noticed any ripped books for the past month or so and those were board books that she some how managed to damage.  I hope she totally stopped but I'm still thinking of sticking to board books for a while.

  • I still read the books to my daughter and just remind her we have to be extra gentle on the non board books.  She is pretty good.  The only book she has ripped a page is my Unofficial Guide to Disney book.  If you are worried a page is going to get ripped then I would suggest staying with the board books.  Pages rip; even adults rip pages.

  • We read all kinds of books now. Board books are great for DS to read on his own, and yet we love to sit down and read a longer picture story.

Trusting DS alone with paperback books..... probably not until 18 months or later.

  • We also have all types.  DD#1 is very possessive and protective of her things, I'd trust her with anything.  SHe's always been very gently with books.

DD#2, however is a shredder.  Anything paper is shredded.  The other day in the car to keep her from falling asleep I handed her a piece of paper b/c she can't not shred.  SHe doesn't get paper books.  Every few days little scraps of paper with letters and words on them are found in her diaper.  So not yet!

DS, however, as much as a brute as he is, will sit and turn the pages mostly gently of paperbacks.  SO he reads whatever he wants.

  • We have always had a mix of regular books and board books. But my DS has always been extremely gentle with his books (and toys) and they are still all in great shape. We are lucky that way. I've never worried about it.

  • We also have a mix.  The board books are out for her enjoyment always and the non board books are kept out of her reach but I find she is more rough with the board books and pop-ups vs paper paged books.
  • We have a mix of books, but I still prefer the board books.  DS has one hardcover paper page book that consistently gets ripped.  It's a book that he can pretty much read himself because it's mostly just letters (which he knows) and I think sometimes he just turns the pages too fast.  However, he has other similar books that have never even had a bent page.

  • We always had a combination.  DD went through a very brief period where she was ripping the flaps off of her board books, but she stopped that really quickly.  Now we check books out of the library all the time, and she reads them by herself with no problem.
  • We've always had a mix of both because some of my favorite books just weren't available in board book form. DD only ever ripped one page a long, long time ago and it was an accident, not the norm at all. Every child is different, but we've always taught DD to be very careful with her books. She is pretty gentle with things, in general.
