1st Trimester

Would you be worried or relieved if you had no weight gain...

I'm 7w 6d pregnant and I have gained no weight what so ever. My belly is bloated off and on and my boobs are much bigger but I'm the same weight as I was pre-pregnancy. I bought some maternity pants because of the bloat and because my normal pants don't button over my stomach. I'm not saying I want to be a heifer, I'm already considered in the "obese" category (5' 5" 204lbs) so I don't want to gain a ton of weight with this pregnancy but I was expecting a little something by now. Is anyone else in the same boat? How do you feel about it?

  • Not gaining anything isn't something to worry about yet. All of the books I've read said you should gain no more than 2-4lbs in the first tri but that it isn't all that uncommon to not gain at all or even to lose some weight with m/s. Good luck!

  • It is very normal to not gain any weight in the 1st tri, and actually some people end up losing weight bc of m/s.  Don't worry about it for now, you are fine :)

  • Neither, it's early. I only worry when the doctor does.
  • I will be tickled if I don't gain any weight for like, I don't know, at least 25 weeks.

  • Many women in the first tri do not gain any weight. many lose a little. The only time I would be a bit worried is if you gain a huge amount or lost a huge amount. Dr's do not want to see any Rapid weight changes. Your ob will tell you how much each appointment that you should gain etc, take their advice. Each person is different.

  • Relax.  I've lost 5 lbs.  No biggie.

  • OP - I'm in the same boat as far as the weight gain goes. I'm at 8wks and I have just gained about .2 lb. Yep, that's point two. But, I've got a cute little bloat bump and everything seems to be fine. 2-4 # in the first tri is normal, but you've got a ways to go before you get out of your 1st tri (me too!), so I wouldn't worry it. Even no gain in the 1st tri would probably be fine. As PPs have said, don't worry until the doc tells you to. You're doing just fine :) HTH

  • Thanks ladies! I'm just paranoid, and a worry wart.  I will follow your advice and wait for the dr to get worried before I do.  Thanks again!

  • I am at 10 weeks tomorrow and haven't gained an ounce.  Of course, I've been sick for weeks.  My doctor said it's absolutely fine and normal not to gain weight in the first tri.

That's good to hear since every book and I do mean every has suggested how the weight gain is supposed to be divided up among the trimesters.  I haven't been sick persay but I have had off and on nausea and when I eat I get full very fast. Just goes to show that even with all of the books in the world there is no set standard.  Thanks for your input! I appreciate it!

  • I haven't gained any weight yet and I am not worried about it.  Actually my friend lost 25 pounds during her first tri because she couldn't keep anything down -- she was overweight to begin with and her baby is progressing and they are both healthy as can be.  She is actually healthier now that she has lost the weight.

Obviously I am not condoning this, just saying it happened to her and she is just fine.  She had extreme morning sickness though.

  • You're only 7 weeks! I didn't gain a pound until after 20 weeks last time. At 7 weeks, frankly, you should be gaining much if anything
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • It's not unusual not to gain any weight. Most women usually don't gain a lot in 1st tri. I've read that you should only try to gain between 3.5 and 5 lbs. I had my 2nd appt today and I actually lost weight, not bc of morning sickness. But, bc I'd had food poisoning last week. The Dr wasn't super worried bc she said I'll probaby gain it back during 2nd tri.

  • I had lost some weight in 1st tri, and didn't get back to pre pregnancy weight and finally start gaining until 18 weeks. I ended up with a 30 lb gain by the end, so some people just have a late start. Just concentrate on eating healthy, and you should be fine.

  • I would be thrilled if I didn't gain any during first tri.  You actually don't need to since baby is so tiny.  Plus I read that you are not suppose to start eating that extra 300 calories until you reach 2nd tri. I actually lost weight during 1st tri when I was preggo with DD, but I have gained from day 1 with this 2nd pregnancy.

  • The last time around, I didn't gain any weight until about 23 weeks. Then they just started piling on.
