Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I'm very scared (somewhat long)

DS will not take a bottle  He took one once about a month ago so I figured we were fine (DD never refused the bottle).  I go back to work in 6 business days.  We discovered this the other day when my sitter, a LLL leader, could not get him to take a bottle in my absence.  DH tried to give him a bottle tonight to no avail.  I tried and of course he began to fuss/cry and bury his head in my arm pit.  I plan to look into the orthodontic nipple; it sounds like a few people have had success w/ them.  Currently we use Dr. Brown's bottles, but I also have Avent from DD (I bought them for her, but she choked on them).  Any other bottle recommendations?  Anyone have any advice/experience to share??  I really don't want him to reverse cycle when I return to work.  My job is very demanding and I can't do it very well w/ horrible sleep (even though he still wakes 3-5x/night currently).  TIA!!!

Thanks!  And, Go Bucks!  We have the same hat.  :)

  • We use Tommee Tippee bottles because the nipple is similiar to my shape and softness. I never give a bottle, but my husband, the grandparents and the daycare provider have successfully. He hasn't had one in 3 weeks, though, so we might have to try again! Your post made me nervous! Smile

Someone recommended wrapping the bottle with a shirt you have worn... maybe try that!

  • We use breastflow.  But maybe keep trying with the one he took before, maybe it's just going to take a few times since it's been so long??
  • Will he not take bm or formula from a bottle? My oldest would only take bm out of a bottle for me and DH, everyone else had to give formula. It was weird, but he stuck to this until he was off the bottle.

He's refusing BM in a bottle.  We haven't tried formula and I don't plan to at this point.  But, thanks for the advice.

  • strange enough the only bottle he likes is the medela. We tried Breast Flow & Dr. Browns. We are practicing when he isn't that hungry and is in a good mood. It seems to be working.

  • The only nipple DS will use is the Gerber NUK latex nipples (standard size, not the large ones).  They have to be latex.  He refuses anything silicone.  These are the orthodontic nipples the hospital used when we had to supplement a couple nights before my milk came in.  I recommend them.

  • I BF and use formula. I have been giving my daughter a bottle/breast since birth, so I may have the advantage. But I recommend NUK bottles. They are shaped like a nipple and super soft. I have had no problem with them for my last 2 kids. I also like them b/c they are inexpensive! Target or Walmart usually carries them.

I go back to work on Monday, so I feel your pain. Good luck!

  • We use Medela bottles.  DD hasn't had problems going between breast & bottle though.

DD lost 9.5% birth weight and we had to supplement so I pumped BM after each feeding the first week.  DH gave it to her with a feeding tube/syringe and his pinky finger because we were worried about nipple confusion.  Maybe this would work for if he won't take a bottle.

  • DD1 refused a bottle for about 3 weeks straight.  We introduced the bottle at 3 weeks but she was already in love with the breast.  We tried a bunch of bottles and finally the Born Free bottles worked.

I read up on the whole thing a bit and the advice was to not make it a battle.  Try for a few moments but don't force it so much that the baby associates the bottle with negativity.  DH or someone other than me would try for about 10 minutes and then give up until another time.

I hope it works for you.  I know how scary it is when your baby doesn't take a bottle and you absolutely need them to.

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice.  I have a Nuby, Platex and Medela bottle that I'll try as well.  If those fail, I'll start w/ the other recommended bottles.  My sitter is going to watch him for a few hours on Monday to see if anything changes.
