Question for breastfeeding moms

How many wet diapers did your baby have the first few days?  Mine has had lots of poopy diapers, but only 2 wet ones today.  Is that normal before your milk comes in?  When does milk usually come in?  TIA!

Re: Question for breastfeeding moms

  • It was hard to tell b/c of the poop diapers (lots), but your lo is probably peeing when they poop as well.

  • I think  you should have more wet ones.  Are you sure the poopy diapers weren't also wet?  Did the hospital send you home with a chart to track how many wet diapers you are having?  I can't remember how many you should have at that age.
  • I noticed this too, but I think he was also peeing with the poopy diapers.

It took almost a week for my milk to come in because I lost so much blood after delivery and supplemented due to jaundice.

  • I had the same experience the first couple of days... almost every diaper was poop, not many "only wet" ones.

  • We also had a ton of poopy diapers and only saw pee when she peed on DH during a diaper change. Docs said this was fine as all the poopy diapers meant things were working and the pee was probably mixed in.

My milk came in 3 days after delivery, but the ratio of diapers never changed, just LOTS of poop and peeing mostly on us (we assume the rest is mixed in the poopy diapers still)

  • I'm still about a week out from joining you ladies over here.. = ) but I just went through my breastfeeding class, so I thought I would share what I learned.. obviously not put into practice yet. We were told that you should have one wet diaper the first day, two the second, three the third.. and so on up to the seventh day. Also they said with cloth diapers it's easier to tell if they are wet since the paper ones pull the moisture in, but that if you are using paper you can put a tissue in the front of the diaper with each change and see if that is getting wet. Again I haven't actually gotten to practice this yet.. = ) but I hope the information helps.. Look forward to joining you guys in a few days..
  • For the first few days LO only had a few pees and lots of poo. The first couple times he peed I couldn't tell, the nurse told me. Bc you can't see it you feel the weight in the front of the diaper... About a week old it hot pretty usual 5/7 times a day. Now it's every change tho.

  • I was told this was not only normal but a good thing, having a lot more poopy than just wet. He is 8 days now and starting to even out and have less diapers - I'm hoping it's normal; it's so different than the huge poos he was having up until the last couple days.

  • i got told to count the poop diapers as wet ones as well.  My milk came in on day 3 and I think there were more wet ones then.
