Postpartum Depression

PPD Before Baby?

I recently spoke with my doctor about the way I've been feeling lately, and she said it could be depression. But she said at this point, it seems manageable without medication and I seem to be functioning okay.

I don't really want to go on a medication, can't I just go to counseling or something? I'm sure most people would prefer it the other way around, but I don't really like taking pills. :(

So, is it normal to have postpartum depression symptoms before baby arrives? And if so, how do I tell it's not just hormones?

Also, is there anything I can try and do now to try and feel better or avoid feeling worse?

Re: PPD Before Baby?

  • Okay, so I just Googled and it seems it would technically be known as "antepartum depression".

    Other questions still stand :)

  • I'm also experiencing this. The funny thing is that over the past couple years I've met almost financial ruin, lost my 60 year old father to Alzheimer's disease, dealt with not having medical insurance for my whole family, ect. and I NEVER felt the need to ask for help with depression.

Now, we live in a bigger, better house for a ton cheaper, I'm at peace with my dad's death, we have insurance and BOOM...depression now that I'm 16 weeks pregnant.

To me, this defies logic and shows the true power of hormones in pregnancy and what they can do to you.

I went on zoloft at the beginning of September and feel better already. BUT, throughout the past few years I also was working out like crazy 5 days a week and followed a very healthy low sugar high protein diet. I let all that go in the first trimester due to already feeling outta whack. I have to wonder about the connection! Hmm...
