Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Legit question

I was thinking about how when women are not able to BF (or choose not to, whatever your choice, you are feeding your kid Yes) they can FF.

What happened back in the day (however far you want to go back) when Formula wasn't available?

Was it all wet nurses?

Feeding Goats/Cows milk?

Death for said infant?

Morbid I know but I'm not sure and I hadn't really thought about it. Anyone know? Or have thoughts?

Re: Legit question

  • I thought about this before.  I am assuming they just gave the baby some kind of other milk - cows, goats, etc and if they couldnt tolerate it either death or maybe a family member/friend/wet nurse nursed the baby?

  • My DH and I actually discussed this when I could not BF DS. DS has a posterior cleft palate and could not create enough suction to BF and must be fed using special nipples. In the hospital we express my clostrum a fed him by syringe. Before formula (this was discussed) I would have had to try to hand express and feed BM by cup or spoon.
  • My mom told me that besides wet nursing, they gave LOs a corn preparation with water and then cooked to make a thicker beverage. In spanish it is called ''atole''.

  • Breastfeeding was ''out of style'' for awhile too.  I think at that time they actually fed babies canned milk or evaporated milk.  I know my mom was fed evaporated milk as a baby.

I have heard this too. Possibly from MIL?

  • When DS couldn't BF, I asked an LC this very question. She said that years ago moms would feed their babies cow's milk or goat's milk or whatever they had with a spoon or a cup. I've also heard that before there was formula people used to use evaporated canned milk, or half n half (table cream). I guess mothers have always done whatever they had to do for their LOs, huh?

My grandmother said this is what she did.

  • I wasn't BF, and at my 3 month appointment they found out I was allergic to formula.  (so was my younger brother). We were given evaporated or pet milk and water until 1 year, then switched to cow's milk.
