red bumps on face

dd has tons of tiny red bumps on her face. i took her to the dr today. he said its a combo of baby acne and somethng similar to dandruff. he told me i can use hyrdcortisone cream. Did anyone experience anything like this with their newborn? And did anything work to clear it up?

Re: red bumps on face

  • Before I opened your post I thought "baby acne". DD had a little and it cleared on its own. Baby acne is very common.

  • yup, ryan had it all over his face and neck.  they cleared up on their own.  if you're b/fing, i've heard some mothers put bm on it and that helps.

  • DS had horrible infant acne. ?It cleared up on its own after a month.
  • Totally acceptable for a newborn - J and A had it. Sometimes they are white too.

They will clear up on their own for sure - I didn't use anything on them because I new they would naturally clear up.

  • K had brutal baby acne, too.  We used a little bit of .5% hydrocortizone on the most severe spots, but the best thing is just time... it clears up.

  • Leah had it really bad.. She had baby acne at first which cleared on its own in a few days, but around 7 weeks, she got eczema.  It was so bad to the point of oozing clear sticky fluid and just looked painful. I felt like such a bad mommy.

Doctor said to try the following: 1% over the counter hydrocortisone, lukewarm baths only 2-3 times per week, absolutely no bath wash, no fragrances/dyes, etc.

When that didn't work, we got prescriptions for 2.5% hydrocortisone which worked at first and then stopped working.

I finally went to a dermatologist for Leah and we got something called Protopic, which worked like a magic cream. The eczema cleared in 2 days!

Hopefully your baby's skin isn't as bad as Leah, but if it is, there is hope!  I just wish I found out about this medicine a long time ago. Leah suffered with oozing red skin for 3 months almost!
