Baby Names

Audra

Hey ladies. I don't post on here a whole lot, but I do appreciate the honesty that this board generates. What do you think of Audra? My DH's late grandmother's name is Audrey, and ever since she died he has really wanted to name a daughter Audrey. I'm not the biggest fan of Audrey, and I'm not really fully on board with naming children after deceased family members (FN's anyway). But I came accross the rarely used Audra and it is really growing on me. DH LOVES it as a tribute to his grandmother.

So what do you think? Of the name in general and how we got to it? And what would work as a MN? Our LN ends in 'man' and most names that end in N don't work

I feel like "Audra" isn't crazy feminine so I would like a really feminine MN.

We also kind of like Charlotte Audra but I'm not 100% sure of the flow there.

Sorry that was so long and TIA for your opinions!

Re: Audra

  • IMO, Audra sounds a little harsh.  I prefer Audrey because it has a softer, more feminine sound.  But if you & DH both love Audra go for it!  It's not a wacky made up name or anything, you're spelling it correctly, and I really like that it's honoring a family member.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for a mn..I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that I feel flows well with Audra.

  • I've always loved the name.  However, it's my aunt's name and I didn't really want to have two Audra's in the family.
  • I love both Audra and Audrey and I think the tribute to your husband's grandmother is a lovely idea.

As for Charlotte Audra . . . although I love both names, I don't the sound and flow are very pleasant. What about Audra Charlotte? Although, honestly, I think you should look to other names besides Charlotte.

  • I think Audra is an okay name. It's a nice break from all of the Audreys out there. I say it out loud, and sometimes I like it, and sometimes I don't. I think it might depend on your last name. I do have an issue with the letter, D making names clunky, but that's just me.

If you're naming after someone, there are those on here who believe it should be the same name and those who believe you can play with it. If I were going to change it by using Audra, I'd use it as a first name. If I were going to use a namesake as a middle name, I'd use the original name, Audrey.

Audra Lorraine, Audra Catherine, Audra Josephine etc.

  • I prefer Audrey to Audra, but I like that Audra is less used.

Personally, I think Charlotte Audrey flows better then Charlotte Audra.

If you use Audra as the FN, I think the MN should start with a constanent, and possibly end with one, as in:

    Audra Violet

    Audra Beth

    Audra Quinn

    Audra Piper

    Audra Genevieve

    Audra Harriet

    Audra Hazel

    Audra Blythe

    Audra Beatrix

  • I have a friend named Audra, I like it a lot, but she gets annoyed because every single person just assumes her name is Audrey.  Just something to keep in mind if you do not like the name Audrey, people will still just assume that is what her name is.

  • It's nice!  I like that it isn't as popular as Audrey and think that a slight switch from the g-ma is fine.

The only thing I could come up with is Audra Louise

ETA: Or Audra Rochelle or Audra Michelle

Audra Louise is gorgeous! I met a 6 month old Louise yesterday, and it was such a great fit on her. She had large dark eyes, and black curls and the sweetish squish I've seen since my kiddo was that age.

  • I like Audra as a more grown-up version of Audrey.  Also like pp's suggestion of Audra Louise.  First MN suggestion that popped into my head was Audra Mae.

  • I like Audra. One of my best friends in college was named Audra Marie, which was her full first name. She went by Audra often though, and we all called her Aud. I also really love Audrey but I think Audra is nice alternative that would still honor someone named Audrey.

  • I really like Audra- it seems very classic and feminine to me.  The only reason its not on my list is b/c I can't figure out what a NN would be.  Aud??  No.  I know not every name needs a NN, but people shorten everything and my husband insists that names be able to be shortened.

  • What about Audria...it's a bit softer than Audra....I have a coworker named this and I think it's really pretty :)
