Are you f_cking kidding me? Because this child has two loving parents who happen to me male, he cannot participate in Boy Scouts? That makes me sick. I feel like we need to call the Today Show, and Dateline and 20/20 and every other news media outlet, and get them to do a story on the disgusting discrimination that is taking place amongst the Boy Scouts of America. This is on their website:
The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.
For nearly a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes ? and, through nearly a century of experience, knows ? that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.
I guess that part of teaching them to be conscientious, responsible and productive members of society, is teaching them to be hate filled, homophobic bigots.
I am so sorry your nephew has been exposed to this type of appalling attitude. It's not fair that in the 21st century people are still being discriminated against because they are gay (or for any other reason). I am crying for them.
That is crappy. Is it just their den doing it or is it actually the organization? My DD and SD's girl scout troop leader is also a boy scout leader and her DH is a den master. I'm going to ask her about the policy on that. I have completed leadership training for girl scouts and that has never been mentioned. I just wonder if its really an organization policy because I know our girl scout troop never turns away any girl. I was looking forward to boy scouts when DS is older but I will not if they have a policy like that.

I don't think girl scouts is connected in anyway...and I believe for boy scouts its the entire organization...in talking about on 6-9 someone said they think it could be by state?

Yeah, they aren't connected. I was just using it as a comparision since they are similar organizations. I thought they might have similar rules. I emailed my friend the troop leader since she's also involved in boy scouts.
I talked to my friend as she basically said that BSA has different units, each unit could have different charters and by laws that restrict that units' membership but is not necessarily a BSA policy. She also said that if he is being pushed out for his parents' sexual orientation that she would recommend he seek an alternate unit or become unattached to a unit and continue on as a scout not connected to a unit having his parents help guide him through the program. In our area these are called "Lonestars." (BTW Girl Scouts has something similar called Juliettes). She said the only reason a membership can be revoked by BSA is if that person commited a serious crime. (Ex. an adult volunteer being charged with molestation). Just thought I'd pass that info to you.

I wonder this too. I'd like to enroll DS when he is older. I looked at their website a few months ago. I think I remember reading that the boyscouts aren't associted with any religion but that certain dens are and that they leave that up to them. I could understand not wanting someone who is gay to be a leader of a den whose parents followed a religion that didn't agree with homosexuality. I don't understand excluding a child because their parents follow a lifestyle that the den doesn't agree with. The child isn't responsible for their parents actions so I don't think they should be punished for them either.

About 90% of the scouts here in las Vegas are Mormon. They have their mtgs in the church, eagle scout ceremonies and what not. It's usually grouped by 'ward'. (I'm not a Mormon myself, but ss's mom's family is). I was not shocked reading about hterry's nephew bc the mormon religion is so against gay/lesbian people. The whole thing makes me really angry.

I find it amazing that in this day and age, that an organization as large as BSA can be so narrow-minded and ignorant.
This and other reasons (they're anti-atheist as well) are why SS will never be in the Boy Scouts.

It really irks me though that this is happening.
