Spaghetti sauce made with red wine (Clicky poll!)

When I make spaghetti sauce, I use red wine.  It is delicious and you can't really leave it out, the sauce just isn't the same.  Would you give it to your LO?  Just wondering.  I can't see any reason NOT to, but it just feels wrong to me for some reason.[Poll]

  • I'm a SS, because I don't even attempt to make my own sauce.

  • I dont drink alcohol, so I also dont eat sauce with alcohol in it. If you say "the alcohol boils off" then why even use it?

No, I wouldn't give it to DD.

The alcohol boils off, but red wine has more flavor than just alcohol.  That flavor remains in whatever you cook with it.  It really brings the sauce together.

  • The heat should burn the alcohol, right? I wouldn't have any problem giving it to Evie. I use a little Merlot in my spaghetti sauce.

I never use a recipe when I cook!  I'm terrible, because people always ask for recipes and I am useless at giving them.  The basic recipe starts out as a medium white onion, a couple cloves of garlic, half a pound of ground beef, a 16 oz can of diced tomatoes, a 16 oz can of crushed tomatoes, and a cup of red wine.  I saute the onion and garlic, brown the beef, then add the tomatoes and wine.  Then I add salt and pepper, rosemary, thyme, and occasionally sage until it tastes "right."

Ha - I was going to send a reply almost exactly like yours. Wine adds a richness to the sauce. I often add wine to marinara sauce and to risotto. I wouldn't hesitate to give either to my daughter.

  • I put red wine in my spaghetti sauce too and DD has had it several times.  I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to give it to her.  The alcohol burns off but the flavor remains.

    Yummm.... now I want spaghetti.

  • Whenever I cook with wine (or beer haha) I never give it to DS.  I'm always afraid all of the alcohol won't burn off.

Well, because the alcohol boils off but the flavor and tannins don't! I agree that sometimes the wine makes the dish!

Do you cook? The wine isn't in there for the alcohol. It's in there for the flavor. I assume it's a cabernet marinara. Sounds tasty. I'd serve it to my family.

  • The alcohol will burn off...but the sulfites stay.  I wouldn't give it to my LO.

Unless your LO is allergic to sulfites, there's no reason to avoid them.

  • It depends on how much you use, what kind of alcohol and how long you cook it. If you cooked it long enough with the wine in there, more than 20 minutes at least then I guess... It's not like your using the entire bottle.
