I think DD forgot how to latch on properly

DD is just over 5 weeks old and I have been EBF since birth.  Last night I fed her at 10:00 pm and then put her down to sleep.  She woke up at 4:00 am and when I tried to feed her she wouldn't latch on properly and was screaming because she was so hungry.  I then for the first time thawed out some BM and had DH feed her while I pumped.  I wanted to make sure I didn't have a blocked duct or something.  I then fed her again at this morning and she still seemed to be having problems but got some milk from me.  Then I was trying to feed her just now and same thing she wasn't latching on properly and didn't seem to be getting enough milk.  I know I have enough supply because when she pulled off I leaked and saturated a burp cloth.  Anyone else experience this?  I'm so upset and confused and don't know what to do.  TIA

Re: I think DD forgot how to latch on properly

  • Does your DD use a pacifier?  My DD was having difficulty w/ her latch at around 2 weeks (after having no problems prior)... it seemed like she was trying to latch in the way she would suck on the paci, so I stopped giving her the paci for a bit.  She fixed her latch and can now take the paci again.

  • No she doesn't use a pacifier.  She did her first couple weeks but then didn't really care for them or want them anymore so she hasn't had one in over three weeks.
  • Have you eaten anything different lately? Maybe your milk has some new flavor that she doesn't like.

  • Is she upset when you're trying to get her latched? DD will not latch properly if she's very upset so I have to wait until she calms down a bit. Of course that sounds easy when I type it, but it is anything but easy when she's upset because she's hungry and needs to calm down before she can latch and eat.

I've also found that keeping myself calm helps. If I get frustrated and upset that makes two of us and it quadruples the problem.
