If you have lost TOO much weight...

Has anyone else lost more weight than they needed/wanted to while BF?  I am still nursing on demand for my 7.5 month old.  He isn't too much into solids yet although we have tried.  Everyone at work keeps commenting on my weight and it kind of makes me uncomfortable.  I have had to go buy new pants because nothing stays on.  If I lose anymore I will have to start shopping in the kids' department.

I will admit I don't eat very healthily (like from all the food groups) on a very consistent basis, but I do what I can.  Also, I work 12 hour shifts twice a week and I have a very hard time eating enough while I am there, though I do try to snack as often as I can.  I am not restricting my diet in any sort of way, I eat absolutely whatever I want, so why I have continued to lose between 1-3 pounds a week for the past 3 months or so is beyond me.  I am on the low end of a "healthy" BMI right at the moment, but my main concern is that the weight loss has not really leveled off.  Two more weeks at this rate and I will be "underweight."

Is the weight loss going to stop, or will I have to wean or drop feedings to make it happen?  I was hoping once baby was eating more solids it would get better, but he won't take purees and so we have been doing BLW with him, so I am not sure how much "solids" he is really getting.

Re: If you have lost TOO much weight...

  • I lost quite a bit of weight, but I think I've stopped losing.  I do feel dizzy, nauseous and weak most days and I think it's because I'm not eating enough.  You should try to find easy to eat snacks like trail mix, dried fruit snacks, granola bars, yogurt, cheese etc.  I'm a SAHM and feel like all I do is take care of DS and I find it hard to remember to eat or have time to prepare food.  If you always have food handy, it's easier.

  • Have you had your thyroid tested? It can be thrown out of whack post-baby.

  • Yeah, like a PP stated, I would go to your primary care doc and make sure there isn't a different problem like thyroid.  I lost a lot of weight too but it has leveled off and hasn't become a problem.  I agree those 12 hr shifts are difficult to get a good amount of food in.  You must pump during that time right?  I pump 3 x's (usually) during my 12's and I stuff my face while doing it, otherwise I wouldn't have the energy to get through the day.

  • Thanks for the thyroid suggestion, I am a nurse and hadn't even really thought of that (although I have had it tested many times in the past because of past issues with weight gain/loss and depression and it's always normal).  I don't have a primary doc but I really do need one, it would be a good idea to get some basic bloodwork done anyway.

I do pump at work, unfortunately I usually only get to pump once during 12 hours (plus add in commute time and it's one pump session in about 13.5 hours).  I do try and snack anytime I can get away, even if it's just a quick bathroom break.

    Thanks for the advice!
