2nd Trimester

How would you like your steak?

Hi! I am receiving conflicting answers from two drs. One told me to have my steak cooked well done. Another said, "That's not even food! No! You don't need to do that!" Haha..a little different! If it's a concern of salmonella or e coli, I'm under the impression that those things only affect the mama? But I'm not 100% sure if this could be a listeria concern..and don't want to take the chance..

So what have your drs told you? TIA mamas! :)

Re: How would you like your steak?

  • I have been told to have hambugers well done and steaks med-well to well done.  I usually pass on eating those things b/c I like mine med-rare.

  • My ob said beef should be well done. I haven't had a steak since then as I like mine medium rare. So far I've made it 5 months, but I doubt I'll make it the full 9. I'm not sure what the concern is, i.e. bacteria.
  • Mine said red meat is very good for you, especially during pregnancy because of the protein and iron content.  I LOVE steak and have had it several times since getting pregnant.  I always order it medium.  I'm not the least bit concerned about it.  I wouldn't order it rare, but I don't see anything wrong with a little pink.

  • My OB said all meat and fish should be completely cooked.

Bacteria on meat is on the surface. On a whole muscle cut (steak, roast), that is the outside. As long as that is properly heated, it doesn't matter what the inside looks like- get it done how you want. The reason hamburgers need to be heated until there is no pink is because eat piece of ground has it's own surface area and each one needs to be heated to 160 to kill bacteria. Since the pieces are so small, it is practically impossible to do this without the entire piece being brown.

This! Steak is just fine, however you want it cooked!

Ohhhh my gosh, THIS. And not with any old boring, pasteurized blue cheese. I want the bad, crumbly-yet-creamy, slightly tart, Danish kind.

    LoL yep!  ::drools::

  • Medium please, make sure there's some pink. I'm not subscribing to the whole, only eat it well done thing.  But then again I still eat tuna, lunch meat and probably some other things on the "Don't cosume if you're pregnant" list.  IMO it's all about trusting the source!

    Your OB is a moron.

I knew about the hamburger bacteria vs. steak. I figured she was making a generalization about beef, the same way they do with alcohol. I've been doing my research and taking her 'advice' with a grain of salt.

To be honest, I only get steak when I go to TGI Fridays and I haven't been in ages so it wasn't a big deal. LOVE the Jack Daniels steak. Ugh, now I want one. Maybe I can talk DH into going out this weekend.

This. It amazes me how little people know about this stuff and how stupid people with an MD can be.

Wow! So informative, thank you! Where did you find that info? Why don't drs know this?! Frustrating. Thank you for your help! :)

It doesn't amaze me anymore. You girls will appreciate this: I worked in a medical facility and while on lunch with several nurses, secretaries, an MD was asking for advice on how to deal with her 18 month old son because she knew she shouldn't hold him while driving, but that's the only way he didn't cry. Indifferent

And I still eat my rare to medium rare.  I do not like hockey pucks disguised as steak.

At first, they were shocked. Then after asking a few questions, like how old he was, how big and such, they told her turn the carseat around. She didn't know that when they are big enough, you turn them so that that are forward facing (she still had him rear-facing). My break was over at that point so I don't know if the conversation continued, but wow.

As a chef I've taken a ton of food safety classes...this is all true.

  • I like my steak rare, but wouldn't eat it that way pregnant, and most restaurants refuse to cook less than med or med rare.

  • We barely wave our steaks over the flame, whether I'm pregnant or not.  There should be no such thing as anything other than well-done hamburger these days, but steaks are harmless.

ETA: I would laugh my ass off if my oB "told" me what to eat or how to eat it, and WTF kind of steak houses do you go to that won't serve rare?

  • I'll take my steak MED please, thanks!

It doesn't even taste like a steak cooked well done.  I've eaten several MED steaks during my pregnancy.  MmM....steeeeak.
