Understanding flight trends

Eric's company bought his plane ticket to CA earlier this week so it sucks that I need such a specific flight and they chose the most $$$ direct flight there was. Anyways that ticket is now up over $500. Is there any chance of it going back down? Maybe on a Tuesday or something or once its up is it up? At that rate I know we wont pay that much but yet Eric's ticket is already booked for 6 days out there when he only will be working for 2... Ugh are we screwed? We waited and got royally screwed trying to watch prices for our wedding. I check Kayak and only get their emails does that drive the price up? Any suggestions?

  • Are you flying into John Wayne or LAX?

I flew to MSP a couple of years ago from SNA (John Wayne) and got a good price (well under $500).  That was in November, a week before Thanksgiving.  I think if you wait a bit it will go back down.  Give it at least a week.

Oh daamn, I think I connected through DFW.  But I still think you should be able to get a better fare.

  • I would guess it'll come down. Of course, you never know. We don't know how full the plane is and the whole thing is a guessing game IMO. I've found some of the cheapest tickets about 6 weeks out and have had some luck with booking late on a Tuesday night. But I've also found really inexpensive tickets inside the 2 week window that usually is very high. I hate this game. It's such a crap shoot.

There are about 30 seats left on the flight there and 60 on the flight back according to Delta's website.

Shannon - Flying into John Wayne, when Eric company bought it was $380 now it is $505, what gives? Ugh.

  • I would definitely wait at least a week and keep checking in the meantime.
  • Some tips I learned about booking flights, from when we were getting married.  Everyone was complaining about paying the $300 airfare to PVR.

-Don't book airfare on the weekdays.  Businesses book during this time and airlines know they can pay more and raise their prices.

-Book between 12am and 3am on Tuesday and Wednesdays are generally cheapest.  We booked our tickets to Mexico during this window and saved $100.

Thank you for such a generious offer Krissy! Pretty dead set, but if worst somes to worse I will just have to deal. We are 30 minutes from the airport here and are definitely not going to pay to park two vehicles there and I have never flown alone much less flown alone with a baby and all the baby "crap."I should have just bought when they were $380 - I thought that was a lot but I will buy in a heartbeat if it goes back down to that!

As soon as I get this figured out we need to get something set up with all you California girls!! I think we are going to do Disney on Monday and then I am alone all day Tuesday & Wednesday to get together as well:)

Awe that is a very nice offer Laura! Eric's company pays for his parking so hopefully we can get the same flight (for cheaper then it is now) and we will be all set.

All you ladies are so generous!
