non-toys as toys

Some of us have noted we use non-traditional toys that our LOs love and use as toys.  What are some of yours?

Ours are empty Gatorade/plastic/medicine bottles (although he enjoys them when they are full as well), empty tissue boxes (we take out the plastic part at the top and put smaller toys in it), a plastic bowl, and paper towel/toilet paper tubes.

I'm sure there's more, b/c I utter to myself at least once/week "and why is it that we buy you toys???"

  • We gave her plastic food containers that came in a set in different sizes and colors. They have a little handle that is easy for her to grab too. Measuring spoons and cups are supposed to be good too.

  • Libby loves to play with measuring cups and spoons too as well as large plastic spatulas and serving spoons. She loves anything made of paper...we usually are trying to keep her away from magazines and catalogs, but in a pinch, I'll use one as a distraction (especially when we're out).

This for us too. They especially love the grocery store catalogs - bright! shiny! crinkly! - but I generally only use them if I'm out of other options (like I don't have one of their books handy).

  • we did this for awhile, until he started eating them and I had to pull a wad out of his mouth!
  • yeah she loves empty plastic water bottles too....and any magazines laying around the house (she'll turn the pages, crinkle them etc but i do have to watch her carefully b/c she will try to eat the paper too!).  she also loves to play w/the cap on her bottle, TV remote, cell phones, laptop, her feeding spoon, coasters, empty baby food jar, empty rice cereal container, and anything with a tag :)

i definitely try to limit her toy purchases to learning/developmental toys b/c we have enough random stuff around the house to keep her entertained :)
