Babies: 6 - 9 Months

transitioning from BF to FF

Is there a transition process, like adding formula to BM? How did you know it was time to transition?

DD has been waking up every three hours for the last 4 nights to eat. She's exhausted; I'm exhausted. I wonder if it's a combo of 6 month growth spurt & AF (my body makes less milk when AF is here).

Re: transitioning from BF to FF

  • Probably a growth spurt or AF.... give it a couple of days. Do you want to stop BF? IMO, you made it this far, why would you stop after 4 bad nights? Unless you've been planning on it all along.

  • Initially my goal was 6 months, as it gets closer (Tuesday) I don't want to stop BF. But I don't want my baby to be hungry and I want her to get good sleep. She gets solids twice a day and BM all day (and all night right now).

If I were you, I'd ride it out a few days and see what happens. LOs go through so many sleep regressions throughout the first year. My DS sttn, then will go a few weeks getting up two or three times. It's normal. They go through so many milestones and growth spurts, having a few bad nights is totally normal. It doesn't mean she's starving! She may want to nurse for comfort or because of a growth spurt.

My LC always said - "never quit on your worse day". It's so true...it's gotten me to almost 9 months of ebf when I thought I'd go 6.  GL!

  • Thank you for your encouragment! I like your LC's quote!
  • Late to the conversation, but if you want to continue, stick with it. It is exhausting when your supply drops, but it all works out. LO doesn't STTN either. Lately he's been waking up twice a night when for so long it was only once. I'm so tired throughout the day, but I can make it to 12 mo.

Also, I don't pump enough for the next day, so LO does get a bottle or two of formula during the day. I'm fine with knowing that he's properly feed. It started with a mixture of BM and formula and went to 1 mixed bottle and another bottle of just formula.
