Babies: 9 - 12 Months

feeding grapes

DD loves grapes - do you still peel them for your LO?  I do. I brought a small container of peeled/cut grapes to dinner with us the other night and one of my friends couldn't believe I peel them. Maybe I don't need to anymore?

Re: feeding grapes

  • I do not peel the grapes but I do cut them for her.  For the amount of grapes that she eats I would be in the kitchen all day peeling those things.

  • No peeling here. I quarter them and DD eats a bazillion.
  • I haven't given grapes out of my own nervousness. How small do you cut them? In quarters?
  • My little guy eats grapes whole, unpeeled.  A few months ago he grabbed one off my plate one day at a picnic and ate it just fine, so I've been letting him have them whole ever since.

I cut the smaller ones in half and the bigger one in quarters.

I am terrified that she might choke, so I halve them, and then cut each half in at least 4 pieces :)

Thanks. I have a huge container of the giant grapes, when I eat them I even take bites. I'll have to try some today, he has been super finicky lately with his food, if its not bananas or in bread/tortilla he won't eat.
  • You don't have to do both... peel them or quarter them - either is fine.

Holy *** at the person who doesn't do either.  Yowza.  Make sure you're up to date on the baby Heimlich.  That scares the *** outta me.

  • I have never peeled them. I cut them into fourths and sometimes eighths if they still seem too big. I used to work in the toddler room at a daycare and have had my fair share of grape related choking incidents. You cant be too careful.

Seriously?  He has teeth, ya know?  And he's extremely capable at using them.  Since he's never so much as gagged after weeks and weeks of eating them, I'd have to say, it's not something I'm going to freak out about.

  • I've been peeling them, but he is NOT a fan.  I think they must be too sour right now.

But I also figure if he's eating blueberries without being peeled, a quartered grape unpeeled isn't much different.

  • I peel and quarter them... and sometimes I use a fork to squash them a little so that they aren't the perfect shape to get lodged in my son's throat.  My son has a tendency to get really excited when he likes something and shove a bunch of food in his mouth so I try to prepare it so that he can't choke whether I give him one piece `A

Yeah. Seriously. My 2 year old has a mouth full of teeth and is capable of using them.  She still periodically gets a little excitable, or eats too fast or whatever, and chokes on something.  I'm not gonna make it easier for her - I still halve her grapes.  Those fluckers and hot dog coins are huge, big time culprits in choking infants and toddlers.

Why do you care so much if it scares me?  You go on with your bad self.  Just make sure you know how to deal with a choking kid.  That's good advice for anyone.  But especially for you, since you give your kid airway-shaped food.
