help me solve my 'wrap' mystery...

I posted on FB that I was looking for an authenitic Mexican rebozo, and a friend told me she had a 'wrap' from Guatemala that she'd send me. She said she had never figured out just what it was for, but would give it to me for free.

I received it the other day and have no idea what it's for or how to use it! (I'm not sure that it's even for babywearing, but that's what she thought it was for.)

It's a large square, woven, and kind of thick but not quite blanket thick. Right down the middle of it is a 'ridge'. I'm not sure how else to describe it. It's just two lines, each about 1/4" wide, of the material that is woven to be much thicker.

Any ideas? (I'll also post on TBW)

  • some photos! it's about 4'x4'

(i talked to my friend, she said her sister bought it from a woman in guatemala that was using it as a sling, but my friend can't figure out how to tie/wrap it.)

awesome! thanks, i hadn't gotten a chance to hit youtube yet. looks about right!

  • i found a couple more on youtube, but with cradle carry. could probably figure out a hip carry, too. still not sure exactly what the 'ridge' is for, maybe just extra support?
  • the fringe is decoration, often they will braid it into patterns.  I have a Kanga that looks about the same size.  I can take the two ends of the wrap pull them over my right shoulder and tie them together, I can set DD in a hip carry on my left hip, super fast and comfy for a while.  My kanga has no fringe though
