Used breast pump....

My DH's aunt brought me a used breast pump from one of her friends. (They don't believe in getting anything new for babies, apparently. But that's a whole 'nother gripe. Sorry, I'm feeling grouchy.)

Should I use a 2nd hand breast pump or should I just buy a new one? Couldn't that be a health issue? I guess I'm just a little more apprehensive cause it's not from someone I know....

Any thoughts?

Re: Used breast pump....

  • im sure you can buy sterile parts for it. i bought a used medela style pump and i just bought sterile parts for it so it's pretty much brand new!

  • What type of pump is it? Some have replaceable parts that you can buy new to ensure that it's sterile.

how much are the sterile parts?

i guess it depends on what pump you have. the ones i got were about $30 total. i would go on amazon.com and look up the brand pump you have and they most likely have spare/sterile parts.

Hospital grade pumps are the only type that are recommended for multiple person use, otherwise there is a risk of contamination. The only way I would ever use a second-hand personal pump would be if it belonged to someone very, very close to me (as in, I knew their medical history). I wouldn't use one from DH's aunt's friend. The idea of my LO consuming something contaminated by a stranger's body fluids skeeves me out.
  • Although there are a lot of people who have no problems using used breast pumps, there is no way in hell I would risk it.  If you just research a little, you may also find that the cost of buying a new one is not worth the risk.  The only pumps which can be safely used multiple times, are hospital grade pumps as there is NO chnace of contamination in the pump.  Please google, "using a used breast pump" and do a lot of reading...
