AR Zantac vs Prilosec ?

Dylan has been on Zantac, but today the dr switched his script to Prilosec.  My copay on the Prilosec is 6 times that of Zantac.  So my question is, is it worth it?  Did you switch and did it make a big difference?  And also WTF? Why is the Prilosec so darn expensive??

Re: AR Zantac vs Prilosec ?

  • We had to switch from Zantac to Tagamet and we saw a big difference but the price was the same.

I would verify that the pharmacy ran your insurance correctly first.  If they did, go ahead and ask the doc why they switched (wouldn't you have covered that already though before agreeing to put LO on something new?) and if that's really necessary.

Also, how much are we talking here? LO's meds were $8/month. If it increased to $48/month I still would've gone with it if necessary. Small price to pay IMO. Having DS on his meds made a HUGE difference and I literally would have done anything to pay for them.

    GL!

  • I know why were switching, we discussed it.  Dylan is on the highest dose possible of Zantac and he is weaning himself off of it as he grows.  I can tell his AR is getting worse because his spit up/breath smells really acidic and he is making his "owie" face.  I haven't seen that face since he got on the Zantac.

The pharmacy said it's because it's "name brand only" and there is nothing comparable.  Our co-pay for name brands is supposed to only be $40 though, so I'm going to call the insurance company tomorrow and see what's up with that.  I will (of course) pay whatever we need to, but I was just really surprised that the price diff was so much.

I must have misread your post or something. There is nothing in there to indicate you didn't know why you were switching. Sorry! Can I claim exhaustion since DS got up for the day at 4:45 after waking every 2 hours since midnight? Stick out tongue

    GL getting it straightened out!

  • Is there a reason that your dr didn't want to try Prevacid? I would see if you could try that through your insurance first. If your insurance still won't pay for it, you can buy Prevacid OTC, open the capsules, and sprinkle it into a few bites of applesauce. Good luck!!

No, he didn't mention any other meds.  I will call today to discuss it with him.  Thanks for the advice!

We had to do the same for M back at 3 months.  Our insurance also didn't cover Prevacid or Prilosec (we're talking over $100 here)...the doc re-wrote the Rx for omeprazole (generic of Prilosec) and our insurance covers it (after fighting with them that this is for a baby NOT an adult).

Fight it out, Momma!  And, I hope it works for him!  It's done wonders for M!

The pharmacy said that there was no generic of Prilosec!  Sigh.  I guess I'm spendng some time on the phone today.
