Trying to Get Pregnant

Waiting for fertlity meds? (PCOS)

So I had my pre conception appointment today, and left feeling a little disappointed. I was dx'd with PCOS about a year ago-and thought that I would be prescribed Clomid this visit. Well I was informed we have to be trying for a year before getting meds. I'm just confused b/c I don't get periods on my own, and don't ovulate on my own.

Has anyone else experienced this? I know that infertility is dx'd after 12 months of trying, but I just thought since I had an infertility issue already, I wouldn't need to wait.

  • I would call and make an appointment with a fertility specialist. You don't want to take any fertility meds with your ob anyways.

Love & luck to my 3TC girls. Congrats to Omega-The boys are here!
If there's one thing I've learned while waiting my turn,
it's that in each life some rain falls but you also get some sun.

  • Why don't I want to take fertility meds with my ob? I really love my OB, and I would like to stay with her through this process, but with all the research I've done I was just expecting to be put on something-not told to basically hold my breath my 12 months and hope and pray I even get a period.

  • I was told the same thing by my OB. The thing is, you really need to see a doc who specializes in fertility issues (like PCOS can cause) or an endocrinologist because they are well-versed in these types of situations. Many OBs really don't see PCOS that often and often mistreat it. My OB wouldn't even put me on metformin.

I saw an endocrinologist and was pleased when he put me on metformin and actos to help regulate my cycle and help me to ovulate. I have insulin resistance and the hormonal imbalance between that and my thyroid is what causes me to not ovulate. I ovulated the very first cycle I started the meds.

I also would start charting your cycles through Fertility Friend so that you can confirm if you are ovulating or not. You can get there by clicking on my, or anyone else's, siggy.

  • I also have PCOS and I tried acupuncture for the first time yesterday. My body does not react well to medications, so I am trying to go the natural route. It was a great experience and hopefully it helps to regulate my cycle. If nothing else I felt very relaxed : )

OB's generally don't monitor patients on clomid, which is a necessity.

  • It sucks because you do like your dr but I would look into getting another. I got super lucky that the dr I have been going to already is also a fertility specialist. I have also been diagnosed with PCOS. We have only been trying for about 4 months and am already currently on my first cycle of clomid. He told me if I didn't want to wait any longer than neither did he! He is also closely monitoring me while on it, which makes me feel a lot better. So you can either hope and pray for the best, or look into a new dr! Good luck!
