talk to me about swaddling

With my daughter we really only swaddled her in the hospital, and she didn't really like it.  This time around I think I am going to swaddle, because I remember my daughter waking herself up every 10mins because of her startle reflex.  does anyne know if swaddling is safe in regards to sids?  I remember with my daughter hearing something that part of having the startle technique is to wake them up a little bit so it helps protect them againt sids...I have no clue if this is acorrect statement.  Just curious if anyone knows about swaddling and if it increases or decreases the risk of sids?

Re: talk to me about swaddling

  • The only thing I have really read that says swaddling decreases SIDS gives the explanation that if a parent swaddles their baby, they are less likely to put baby to sleep on stomach. It also says that babies that are swaddled and sleep on their back are less likely than unswaddled back sleeping babies to get SIDS. I don't actually know, this is stuff I have just read! I will try to swaddle my baby, but I guess I won't know how it will work out until I actually try it.

  • I've never heard either way, but that doesn't mean anything.  It makes sense that swaddling them will require them to be on their backs and help reduce SIDS.  I was told at the hospital that it was fine to swaddle them until they can get out of the swaddle.  That can really depend on how good you are at swaddling, since I have friends that say their child won't stay swaddled and I see how loosely they do it.  My DS however, wouldn't sleep for the first 2-3 weeks unless he was swaddled, so I kept him that way as long as I could.  My opinion was that none of the swaddling blankets I could find in stores were big enough, but I had a few that my aunt made me that were perfect (bigger).
  • Swaddling is one of the 5 S's in Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp, M.D..  It makes the baby feel like he is still in the womb.  This book is a great resource and gives step by step instructions on "How to Swaddle".  It doesn't specifically talk about swaddling and SIDS, but the baby is wrapped tight with a thin blanket around his shoulders.  The blanket shouldnt't come near his face.  I prefer the waffle texture/thermal blankets for swaddling because they are stretchy and you can wrap tighter vs. using a receiving blanket.  To avoid overheating, make sure he isn't dressed heavy if you are trying to swaddle.  The blanket should be thin enough, so he shouldn't get overheated.
  • Swaddling can reduce the risk, if you do it correctly.  We used Halo Sleepsack Swaddles, so that there was no risk of a blanket coming undone and ending up covering LO's face.  Plus it was easier to get that nice tight swaddle, IMO.

And I saw on my facebook news feed that Halo is donating $1 to SIDS awareness for every new fan!  Pretty easy to help the cause.  Go to:   https://www.facebook.com/HaloSleepSack
