Taking away the Paci

Cristian just turned 2 and my plan was always to take away the paci at 2 years old.  I wanted to get advice from those that have done this b/c this weekend the "bobo fairy" is coming to our house...that's the plan, atleast!  Wink

Re: Taking away the Paci

  • good luck--let me know how it goes.  We will be heading down that path in a few months.  My 20 month old if full-on addicted like crack to her binky.
  • Loading the player...
  • I will let you know how it all goes...prayers will be involved let me tell you!  My little one uses his for naps/bedtime only...but he uses it to soothe himself to sleep so I'm hoping we're not up all night!

  • The "Nuk" fairy was at our house this summer.  I explained to Ava that there were babies that needed pacifiers and that the fairy was going to come and get them from her b/c she was a big girl now and didn't need them anymore.  So I got a bag out, she collected all 72,563 Nuks around the house and put them in the bag.  The fairy brought her a Big Girl Doll that she could use to snuggle with for comfort.

The first 2 naps/nights were tough, b/c that's when she realized that there was no going back.  She even offered to give her doll back to get some Nuks back.  No dice.  She cried for about an hour or so those nights.

Whatever you do, don't cave back in and give them back for any reason.  Once they are gone, they are gone for good.  After about a week or so she didn't even talk about them anymore, except to say that babies were using her old Nuks and she was a big girl now.  Good luck!

  • Ditto Kerrin (as always)...LOL!   Only in our case we started talking about this last Easter.  Avery got very sick around that time so it got put off until after the big girl bed.  Still...she remembered Easter...so Avery always says "Bunny took my boppies to give to the babies."   Say THAT 5 times fast ;)

  • DH and I went on vacation for 5 days.  When I came back I found out my sister took Ava's away.  We experienced the same as other posters in that the first few nights were the worse but the main thing is making sure you stick with it.  I wanted to throw them all out but DH said no keep them b/c we may need them.  I don't think so!  I wouldn't have gone through 2/3 rough nights just to give it to her again.  I am slowly throwing them all away.

  • We did it right before his 2nd birthday as well.  Cold turkey.  I was so scared but he really only cried about it for a short time for 2 nights.  We made sure he had his lovie and he did fine.  I did find out that his teacher was still giving him a paci at daycare (not even HIS paci- I FREAKED out).  In fact, I actually threw it away right in front of her!  Anyway, she had to deal with a lot more whining then I did but I figured it served her right.

  • crap--this post is making me realize that I should probably get rid of Aerin's binky before we move Dec 1, because after that time she and Alec will be sharing a room.

I'm not ready for this yet--uckkk!!

  • I cut the tip off my daughters on her 2nd b-day and she tried to suck it and it wouldn't work. She cried for the first 2-3 nights but then was fine without it. When she stopped asking for it ( about a week) we took the cut paci and took her to build a bear where she said bye bye to the paci and put it inside the bear. She still sleeps with the bear almost every night.

  • Thanks, ladies - I appreciate your advice!  I was thinking about cutting the tip off also.  We've started talking about it this week to try and prepare him for what's to come.  This weekend the fairy is coming to take the pacis (we have 3 in the house) - I like the bag to help collect them idea.  And he'll get a big boy prize too.

Since turning 2 he's had some major growth spurts in lots of ways...so I have to stagger these new stages so he's not so overloaded (me and hubs too)...we've got to take the paci away, move to a twin bed (he's in toddler bed now but my boy is 37 inches tall!) and also begin potty training!!! Stick out tongue

  • Just wanted to say good luck! The best advice has already been given just that once they are gone, don't give in and give them back. Gah, he is so big!
