Let's talk about diaper cakes...

My family made 5 diaper cakes to decorate the tables at the shower. I am trying to go though the stuff from the shower and de-clutter DS room today. What in the heck do I do with all of the diapers? His room is way to small for me to keep them all put together.  If you have had a diaper cake what did you do with it ?

  • I thought you were supposed to take them apart and actually use the stuff? Thats what I did? I hope I didn't mess up though.....

  • What size are the diapers?

I had a diaper wreath that had newborn and preemie diapers.  I used the diapers to stock the changing stations around the house.

  • I only had one and it was super cute but you are right...I was torn with what to do with it and just how long do you leave it as a cake? All my diapers were 2-3-4 sizes so they are in a huge canvas bag in the top of the closet

I didnt know what else to do with them.

  • My friend made me one for my shower. She put ribbon around all three tiers but hot glued the ribbon to the diapers! The diapers on the outside of the cake are pretty much useless! And not to mention she hot glued other little things to the diapers too... why would one do that? I do not know...

  • Ugh 5! I had one and a diaper wreath and I was annoyed having to take them apart! I kept all the diapers and put them in a storage bin until I'm ready to use them, I secretly just wanted to throw them both away!

  • The practical side of me still doesn't understand why people can't just tie a ribbon around a pack of diapers....It seems like it would be alot easier for everyone.

  • I got one, but thankfully my friend only used 1 size of diapers to make it.  Since she just pinned ribbon around the outside, I could take the entire thing apart.  I just need to un-rubberband the diapers so they can be used.
  • I didnt have diaper cakes at my shower, but I always thoguht you were supposed to take them apart and use them. I did have someone buy me 4 huge boxes of diapers, and swear we were just stuffing diapers wherever we could in the house.
  • Personally at first I thought the diaper cakes were tacky.  But then I learned how to make one and wanted to create my own sooooo badly for someone but I know no one else who was pregnant.  My inlaws suprised me with my very own awesome diaper cake.  I took it apart and stacked the diapers in a diaper hamper/holder.

    ....but 5....wow

I know they are so cute. I feel bad for taking them apart , but I really do not have room for them. I have all different sizes to choose from they make each tier a new size.  I think I am just going to get a big basket or bag to keep them in.

I have all different sizes on each cake. Good thinking about all the changing stations. We have a pack and play with a diaper holder, and I will just stick them in there.

  • I took a million pictures of it from every angle because it was SOOOO cute and then took it apart (had onesies, booties, bibs)...some of the diapers that had glue from the glue gun tore and I worried they would leak so I threw away the "damaged" ones.

  • You will be shocked at the speed in which you go through diapers.  I promise they won't be "taking up too much room" for long :).

I had two diaper cakes with my DD.  I just took them apart, sorted by size, and used the diapers when she grew into them.  Most were NB and size 1.  My only complaint was that they were huggies diapers and they didn't work very well on DD.

the small clear rubber band removal was the most annoying part!

  • I took mine apart last night... I only had three though and I was saying holy diapers, I can't imagine what your going to be saying for five. Once I took them apart I put the smaller sized diapers in her diaper stacker and then I put the rest in her closet. I will be using the smaller diapers from the diaper cakes first, before we will be opening up packages of diapers.

  • Talk about me being "out of touch"!!!  I just assumed that people still made diaper cakes out of CLOTH DIAPERS!!  (I had to google it to see for myself).

Now you can all have a laugh on me!  LOL!

  • I took them all apart and put everything away. I stacked all the diapers into a drawer.

This is why I never do diaper cakes for baby showers I co-host - you never know what kind of diaper will work for each baby and I would hate to go through the trouble of MAKING the entire cake (or expense of buying one) and it be the wrong type of diaper.... I'd much rather some pretty centerpieces and a package of unopened diapers that can be taken back if need-be.

My MIL and mom threw my shower for me and asked that the guests bring a diaper decoration... I had a friend hot glue her decoration making it useless later on. It was super cute (turtles - which is the nursery theme) but I had to toss it later on since I don't have any place to put it.

My MIL did make 3 diaper cakes but she used pins and rubber bands to keep the diapers together and keep the ribbons on tightly.

Needless to say I have 3 HUGE gift bags full of diapers, 1 in size 1 and 2 in size 2 diapers... (thank goodness the diapers say the sizes on them) LOL.

  • I got a huge, adorable one at my shower 6 weeks ago. I haven't taken it apart yet I figured I'd wait til closer to baby time (maybe next week). Right now I have it together so people can see it when they come over that didn't go to my shower. I plan to use all the diapers after I take it apart.

  • I only got one but I left it together because it was just so darn cute, and it goes with the theme in my nursery since my mom made it so it matches everything really cute. I just left it on the dresser, and am not gonna use it until I am low on diapers and don't wanna run to the store.

  • They're cute if done right and they use good diapers/useful items.  We were given one, and it took DH all of 30 minutes to undo the binders while he watched football last weekend - no big deal and I don't think you can ever have too many diapers.
