Using daycare at the gym? Thoughts?

DD doesn't go to daycare regularly because I SAH, but I have got to get my butt to the gym. They offer childcare for $3 an hour and are allowed to take one infant at a time. I'm squeamish to leave her but I really need to work out. I know she will be right there and I'll be able to check on her however often I want but I guess I'm just feeling selfish.

I'm going today to check it out and meet the providers. What sort of questions should I ask? If your DC started going to a daycare when they were a little older, how did they react?

  • What I like about the gym I go to is that all the machines have individual tv's and the nursery has it's own channel so I can watch the entire time I'm on a machine.  The age requirement for my gym is 6 months but I started bringing my DS at 5 months.  They didn't ask for any proof/verification and I felt he was ready, especially since he'd be with my DD.

They love it.  A change of scenery is good and the different toys always pique their interest and hold their attention!

My DD didn't start going until she was about a year and she did fine but she's never had any separation issues. She has no problems leaving her mom LOL.  I've seen other kids cry and scream though, but seriously, the minute the parent is gone the kids are fine!

That is very cool about the cameras. I would feel a lot better if that were the case at my gym! I *think* she'll be okay.?

  • DD does not go to a day care, but I do use the gym daycare a few times a week. Our is free and you can stay up to 1.5 hrs. My sister used them with my niece so I felt very comfortable with them.

They are awesome and really get to know the kids. There are two ladies that are always there during the week when I go and they just light up when I bring Sophie in and are the same way with my niece.

At my gym they aren't allowed to change their diapers so they come get me if she goes, they also can't feed them. If they cry for more then 5 minutes without being consoled (sp) they also will come get me. I really love them and feel completely comfortable leaving her there so I can get a work out in.

  • Our gym has the childcare area right up in front with windows, so you can see easily, and it's free.  However they don't take infants, so I've only been able to make it to the gym when DH is home or my mom is available to babysit.
  • If you have a family membership at our YMCA they will watch your child for up to 2 hours a day (free). DH and I are thinking of joining - we really need to start working out again.
  • Here I am thinking I'm getting a great deal with $3 an hour! Haha. Cool, I hope we have a positive experience with it as well. The cardio kickboxing classes are calling my name!
  • Don't feel guilty!  Your LO will benefit from interaction with others and new toys and you'll benefit from a nice work out!  It's a win-win!

Happy Birthday, little man. We love you so much!

My favorite money saving tip: I've earned more than $300 in gift cards (Amazon, Starbucks, Southwest!) using SwagBucks for internet searching - and you can too! It's FREE and EASY!
  • I was going to a mommy-and-me class where I'd take my infant with me and put my toddler in the childcare. She loved it. But now that class conflicts with my DD1's toddler class.

DD2 has been there once for the childcare. I really should get there more often. :P It's clean, bright and the staff are cheerful and helpful.

But I used the childcare at my old gym once and never again. It was chaotic, messy, and they clearly didn't put much thought or effort into it. Now we're using a community center as our gym and it's so much better.

Make sure that you ask what the supervisor:kid ratio is, make sure that the providers are CPR/First Aid certified.  And, I would go in with her for awhile before you intend to leave her in there.  My gym has a TERRIBLE childcare area - looks like an afterthought to the gym's original design.  However, my first and longest job was working in a childcare at a gym.  It was a superb facility with great staff.

  • We've used ours at our gym. They won't change a diaper, though, so I don't know what the point is :) I'm sure others are better at the questions you can ask... I would ask what kind of experience with babies they have and what they do with them. Ours is strict about the baby ratio, but it's overwhelmed with bigger kids and babies don't get a lot of attention.

Thank you! I will definitely be asking about those issues. Let me know if you think of any other good questions. So far it is CPR-First Aid/ Staff ratio/ training/ and what there policies are about coming to get me if an issue arises. ?
