Positive hpt, negative blood test

Long story short. Went off the pill in early July, started ttc then. Never got my period, but about a month ago had a day or two of dizziness, then recently had some other symptoms - back pain, face broke out, random pains in my stomach. So I took a pregnancy test last week that came back positive. I went to the doctor on Friday but the blood test came back negative. So now I'm just confused! The dr. said I should expect my period soon but if I don't get it soon I'm wondering if I should take another pregnancy test. I've read that getting a false positive on a hpt is rare but I can't explain why the blood test would be negative. Did anyone have this happen to them? Thanks in advance. I'm just trying to make sense of it and not drive myself crazy!

Could have been an evaporation line on the HPT.

Did you follow the hpt instructions exactly? If you check the results later than you're supposed to, you could see an evap line which looks like a + line.

Sorry you're going through this. I imagine that the blood test is way more accurate than any hpt.

I'm confused about what you are confused about. It sounds like you got a false positive on your HPT (which is rare, but it happens). Why would you not be able to explain the negative blood test? If the HPT is a false positive, then of course your blood test would be negative because you aren't pregnant. What am I missing?

when did you take the last HPT? If its been a couple of days, I might test again, then once a week until you get your period.

However, since it was a blood test that came back negative, it sounds like you may not be pregnant, or possibly experienced CP.

It sounds a bit like a chemical pregnancy to me. But you can always test again if AF doesn't show up in a week. Blood tests are usually more accurate, but it never hurts to be certain. Good luck!

This same thing happened to me. I got a BFP and was in a car accident, (not bad) they wanted to do Xrays. THat was the only reason a blood test was done and it was negative. AF showed up about a week later. I am sorry you are going through this. I know the feeling of confusion. I really wanted to believe that the bood test was wrong but knew that was unlikely.

In case you don't know, blue dye tests are known for "evaporated lines". You can take another test. THis did help me lay to rest all the what ifs I had going on in my mind. Best of luck to you!!

Thanks for the responses. I guess I was hoping someone would reply and say they had the same thing happen but ended up being pregnant anyway. Not that I wanted to delude myself but it was weird to feel so certain and then have that not be the case.

I probably will take another test soon if I don't get my AF by next weekend. Thanks for the kind words.

(Hope you don't mind me lurking and posting) Months ago, I had a blood test done on a Thursday which came back negative. I lived it up over the weekend, but still felt kind off on Monday. I took an HPT that night and it was positive. Although it is not common, it is possible to get a negative blood test and then a positive HPT that is accurate. My doctor said the threshold amount of HCG hormone detected was probably just not great enough when taken to trigger a positive since the pregnancy was so early. Good luck!
