So, I mentioned a few days ago that OB suggested induction at 40w2d because LO was getting "big" and he didn't want him to be to big for vaginal delivery and have to have a c/s. His method for finding this out is based on my fundal height. DH was 11lb 1 oz and I was 6 lbs 9 oz, both of us full term.
I got to thinking and I googled....it seems like LO birth weight has alot more to do with me than with DH. MIL gained 60 lbs with him, and I've only gained 31 at this point. I asked my Dr. if he was going to do an ultrasound to measure and get a better idea of his size and he said no.....
So should I really just go with this? I feel like its jumping the gun to make assumptions based on fundal height. I'll be kinda mad if he's like 7 lbs or something and I was induced for no reason.
Re: Question about induction....
The only thing that I have to offer is that I have a friend whose son is now 4. The doctor told her he would be close to 10 lbs and she would be best off inducing 2 weeks early - she did and the baby was 5lb 6oz.
The reason I mention this is because they don't always know what they think they know. GL whatever you decide to do!

See, that is what I'm worried about. How do they get it wrong by THAT much?
If you were "normal" up until last week and he won't give you numbers or an ultrasound to confirm, I would not be convinced enough to go ahead with it.
And I'd really question how fast he will be pushing you for a c/s if your labor is slow.
There could be several factors at play - you could have more amniotic fluid than usual, baby could be in a strange position, baby could not have descended very far yet, or baby could be big. Who knows.
My experience from manipulation and fundal height was that my physician told me baby might be bigger than average - and due to my deep pelvis the doc underestimated baby's size (by about 2 1/2lbs).
Still, while u/s isn't the be-all end-all in the discussion (u/s estimates can vary by as much as 2lbs as well), I'd want to take a look before signing up for an induction before 42 weeks. We'll be doing that this time around and while I might well end up being induced, I need to *see* baby before making that decision, kwim?

At one point my fundal height was 3 weeks off (2 months ago)...I have a fairly short torso and LO was sitting up really high, which I think threw it off. However, when they did an u/s to measure her last week, they estimate she'll be about 7.5lbs if she was born next week. If they went strictly by fundal height, I'm sure they would have considered her "too big" to stay in this long!
It's less accurate the further along you are.
I was worried about this too. All this unneeded intervention. I'm gonna need some hard evidence at this next appointment, or I'm gonna cancel it. I really don't like this OB, but we moved and I had to switch and I took the first suggestion from one of MIL friends (who I decided I can't stand, after meeting her at my shower. She acted like having a baby was a major inconvenience for her). My first OB wanted to induce if we stayed with him after the move at around 38 weeks (for pure convenience), and that pissed me off so I went ahead and switched. What does it take to get a good OB in this part of the world? Are MW better? I'm thinking MW for the next baby, they seem less pushy.
Hmm, I have a short torso and he is also sitting very high, that makes me wonder even more now...
This exactly.

I was induced with DS - let me tell you, the contractions were unbelievable ...I didn't last long before having to get an epidural. After a while DS' heart rate would drop every time I had a contraction (...found out LATER from the Dr. that the induction probably caused this) ...they gave me about 30mins to dilate further (...which is hard to help that process along when you can't walk!) and I ended up having to have a c-section.
So ...if you are going into the induction process, be mentally prepared to have a c-section as a possibility ...I was only given 30mins to process this...and its just not enough time.
I would not induce without having another u/s to confirm the size of your LO.
Good Luck!

I'd look into your bishop's scores to see if you're match for an induction. I had very low bishop's score (1) and my Dr chose to induce. I ended up with a c/s and am now scheduling my 3rd c/s. It's major surgery.
If you don't care about avoiding a c/s then I'd say go for it, but if you'd like to try to avoid it. I'd hold off.
I want to avoid a c/s VERY MUCH. We talked about having more children and I don't want to have to schedule a c/s "just because" I had one before.
I've heard about that bishop's score and I wondered what mine was. He told me I was favorable for an induction, but I am not dial, just started to soften. I've never had any other children so how does this make me favorable?
I'd ask for more clarification about how "big" he's expected to be. One week of measuring ahead on fundal height doesn't necessarily mean much, fundal height can be effected by so many different things: position of baby, fluid level, etc.
Also. I gained 50lbs. with my first and she was 6lbs. 10oz. - My grandma says she gained 10lbs. with my Aunt and my Aunt was 8lbs. so the mother's weight gain does not always mean anything in terms of how big or small the baby will be. Those "guesses" can be SO far off, there are plenty of women who get told "Oh we want to deliver you, you're measuring way ahead" and then have a 6-7lb. baby instead of the 9 or 10lber they were induced for.
I had a great induction experience with my first (for pre-e, the pre-e part wasn't fantastic but the overall induction went very well) - but if you aren't comfortable with it and don't feel your doctor's reasoning is enough to be concerned about (especially since it seems he hasn't given you enough evidence about it) then I'd say something.
Good Luck!!
Your OB doesn't sound like he's very forthcoming with information. He needs to know that you understand what the Bishops score is and that he needs to be specific when he addresses your questions. It's patronizing and condescending for him to give you such vague answers that really don't help you at all.
Yes, far less pushy and I have loved my MW experience thus far. They are the other extreme. My OB talked induction with both kids, MW- no talk of induction whatsoever!
